Exploring Seosan: The Legacy of Astronomer Ryu Bang-taek

During my trip to Seosan, I visited several notable places:
Songgok Seowon, Ryu Bang-taek Astronomy and Meteorology Science Center,
and Geumheon Yeongjeonggak.
These sites are conveniently located close to each other, making it easy to explore them all in one visit.
Additionally, there is a well-maintained park nearby,
providing a perfect spot for a brief rest.
While wandering around, I wondered, "What is that over there?"
So, I decided to check it out.
The surroundings are beautifully landscaped.
I visited during the vibrant spring season,
when the green trees were refreshing to the eyes.
There were also spots to take a short break.
I even saw trees that are commonly found near temples.
I’m not very knowledgeable about tree names, haha.
Geumheon Yeongjeonggak is dedicated to the renowned astronomer
Ryu Bang-taek (1320–1402),
who hailed from Seosan (Yangchon-ri).
He was a great astronomer during the late Goryeo and early Joseon periods,
known for his expertise in astronomical calculations and celestial movements.
In 1395, he created the National Treasure No. 228,
the Cheonsang Yeolcha Bunyajido.
To honor his achievements and promote the spirit of astronomy,
Geumheon Yeongjeonggak was established in December 2018.
Honestly, I hadn’t heard of Ryu Bang-taek before,
but I have seen the Cheonsang Yeolcha Bunyajido in museums.
It’s remarkable to learn that such a famous figure
was from Seosan.
Unfortunately, the entrance was locked when I visited,
but I was able to take photos through the fence.
Inside, there are descriptions of Ryu Bang-taek's life and achievements,
along with the Cheonsang Yeolcha Bunyajido displayed nearby.
Geumheon Yeongjeonggak is a place that honors
the legacy of astronomer Ryu Bang-taek.
You can also explore his footprints at Songgok Seowon
and the Ryu Bang-taek Astronomy and Meteorology Science Center.
I highly recommend visiting during your trip to Seosan.
