Did you know there is a space dedicated to honoring those who sacrificed for the nation behind Mannyeong Bridge? Today, I would like to introduce Namsan National Defense Park, where you can encounter deep historical narratives related to national defense in Korea.
Namsan National Defense Park is located right next to Mannyeong Bridge, a cultural heritage representative of Changnyeong. Many visitors who come to see the cherry blossoms often stumble upon this park.
This area is known as a sacred ground for national defense, where you can find significant historical sites of our country in one location.
As you walk along the trail visible in the photos, you'll find facilities commemorating the Imjin War, the March 1st Movement, and the Korean War, making this a place of great historical value.
Moreover, as mentioned earlier, it is connected to Mannyeong Bridge and features walking paths and resting areas, allowing for a leisurely exploration. While the term "historical park" may seem daunting, it is actually a pleasant space to stroll and take in the surroundings.
The first national defense facility you will encounter is the Chonghon Tower, related to the Imjin War. The tall, white tower exudes a solemn atmosphere.
This area is also significant as it holds the history of General Kwak Jae-woo and his soldiers who fought against the Japanese forces. They worked to defend the region by halting the advance of enemy troops along the Nakdong River. The Chonghon Tower was erected to honor the sacrifices and spirit of these ancestors.
Next to the tower, there is a relief that vividly depicts scenes of battle.
Named "Imjin War Hwa-wang Mountain Victory Painting," it captures the valiant efforts of the soldiers during the Battle of Hwa-wang Mountain. While it may not be easily visible from afar, the expressions and movements are intricately detailed up close, conveying a sense of urgency that is worth seeing.
As you venture deeper, you will find several stele dedicated to local officials who governed the Yeongsan area.
There are a total of 32 stele, and since the erection of commemorative stele required royal approval, those whose names are inscribed here were all recognized for their contributions.
In the center of the park, you will find the Jeonje Hyun-gam Loyalty Monument, erected to honor the loyalty of the Jeonje Hyun-gam who worked to protect Yeongsan during the Imjin War.
The monument is preserved in a stone pavilion and rests on a turtle-shaped pedestal. Despite the passage of time, the loyalty of this figure seems to endure.
While the historical narratives continue, there is also a space that refreshes the atmosphere. The highlight here is a watermill.
The water flows and turns the wheel, catching the eye. The refreshing sound of falling water and the charming appearance create a pleasant spot for a brief rest.
This space might be easily overlooked, but upon closer inspection, it holds more stories than you might expect. By taking your time to explore the Chonghon Tower, the monuments, and the watermill, you can gain a deeper understanding of the history that Changnyeong holds.
