Exploring Mangwolsan Mountain: A Scenic Adventure

Mangwolsan Mountain, located in Busan's Gijang, boasts a romantic name meaning "the mountain that gazes at the moon," and offers breathtaking panoramic views. It is home to Sohakdae, one of the eight scenic spots of Gijang.
Leaving behind the pink cherry blossom season, I headed towards the lush greenery of Mangwolsan.
The hiking trail to Mangwolsan begins across from the wooden Nuri Park next to Jeonggwan Shinjeong High School.
At the trailhead, there is a dust-removal area and an automatic insect repellent dispenser.
After grabbing a bottle of water and spraying insect repellent on my legs, I set off.
The path up the mountain is filled with greenery.
The trees, still slightly tinted with a light green hue, provide a soothing sight. There are clear signposts along the way, so there's no need to worry about getting lost.
Both sides of the trail are dense with foliage, and the climb feels more challenging than the previous hike I took at Ilgwang Mountain last month.
Though the seemingly endless stairs made me consider giving up, I pressed on, taking breaks as needed.
The rocks cascading beside the stairs create a mystical atmosphere.
As I admired the wildflowers blooming along the trail, I noticed the fallen petals from the cherry blossoms still carpeting the ground.
Though the many steps left me breathless, the shade from the thick trees provided a comforting companion on this verdant spring day.
At the midpoint of my ascent, I encountered a bench that felt like a sweet reward.
Benches scattered along the trail offer perfect spots for a brief rest.
Finally, nearing the summit, I spotted the pink azaleas heralding spring, motivating me to quicken my pace.
At the fork between Mangwolsan and Baegunsan, there are exercise equipment, a pavilion, restrooms, and picnic tables.
Following the dirt path and stairs along the ridge, the true summit of Mangwolsan is just ahead.
Seeing the Mangwolsan sign and the Sohakdae marker was a delightful sight.
Sohakdae refers to the magnificent Maebawi, resembling a folding screen, located in Maehak-ri, Jeonggwan-eup. It is said that cranes used to nest there, and the moon viewed from this spot is particularly bright, hence the name Mangwolsan.
Upon reaching the summit, I felt exhilarated despite the strong April sun making it a bit more challenging to breathe. However, the fresh air filled me with a sense of achievement.
At the top of Mangwolsan, there is an observation deck above Sohakdae, along with a bench offering rest to those who reach the summit.
The panoramic view from Mangwolsan captures Jeonggwan New Town and stretches all the way to the sea. The moonlight rising above Sohakdae creates a shimmering reflection on the East Sea, making me want to return with friends to witness this scenery again.
This weekend, consider hiking Mangwolsan in Busan to enjoy both exercise and the beautiful panoramic views. The effort put into climbing will surely bring a rewarding sense of accomplishment.
