Exploring Cheongsong: Art, Nature, and Healthy Cuisine

When the travel season arrives, one of the first places that comes to mind is Cheongsong.
In the past, the journey to Cheongsong felt somewhat distant, but since the opening of the Sangju-Yeongdeok Expressway, accessibility has greatly improved, making it a hassle-free travel destination!
Cheongsong is perfect for a day trip or a 1-night, 2-day itinerary, especially when combined with trips to Yeongdeok or Pohang.
Today, I will introduce you to the Cheongsong Art Museum and the Sinchon Mineral Spring, where you can enjoy art, nature, and healthy food all in one place.
Shall we embark on a journey to experience the depth of art, the uniqueness of the mineral spring, and healthy cuisine that Cheongsong has to offer?
The Cheongsong Art Museum, located in Sinchon-ri, Jinbo-myeon, Cheongsong-gun, exudes a warm and welcoming atmosphere from the moment you step inside.
Originally, this place was Sinchon Elementary School, filled with children's laughter.
After the school closed, the space remained vacant for a long time before being remodeled in 2005 into a municipal art museum representing local culture and arts.
The transformation of a school building into an art space is deeply meaningful.
As you explore, you will find traces of the school and contemporary exhibitions harmoniously blended, creating a unique atmosphere.
The museum showcases over 355 works, primarily featuring pieces by master Lee Won-jo of traditional Korean painting, along with ceramics, sculptures, and works by various renowned artists.
The main attraction of the museum is undoubtedly the 'Cheongnyangdaewoon-do'.
This artwork has its own dedicated exhibition hall within the museum, highlighting its significance.
Upon entering the exhibition hall, visitors are often left in awe.
Cheongnyangdaewoon-do is the largest traditional Korean painting in the country, measuring 46 meters wide and 6.7 meters tall.
Seeing it in person is an overwhelming experience that far exceeds viewing it in photos.
Master Lee climbed Cheongnyang Mountain countless times to observe nature while completing this piece.
He dedicated 180 days in a warehouse in Bonghwa, cutting off contact with the outside world to focus solely on his work.
Knowing that he completed this artwork by connecting 400 sheets of traditional paper adds to its amazement.
As you approach, you can see the texture of each brushstroke, and stepping back reveals the majestic Cheongnyang Mountain.
The mountain's contours, expressed through ink washes, create a sense of depth that varies with your viewing position.
This is a piece that you will want to see multiple times.
Standing before this vast canvas feels like walking through a deep valley of Cheongnyang Mountain.
Currently, the museum is hosting a special exhibition titled 'Art Bank IN Cheongsong' until July 28.
This exhibition, supported by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, showcases 22 pieces, including 17 from the museum's collection.
After enjoying the museum, it's time to visit another Cheongsong attraction, the Sinchon Mineral Spring, which is just a 2-minute walk away.
The area around the spring is home to restaurants specializing in boiled chicken.
The unique aspect of these restaurants is that they use Sinchon mineral water to prepare their dishes.
Each restaurant has its own cooking method, resulting in slightly different flavors, even for the same dish.
You can enjoy various chicken dishes, including traditional boiled chicken, grilled chicken, and chicken stew.
This destination is perfect for rejuvenating your body during the hot summer months.
In July, as we approach the hottest days, hearty and nutritious meals become even more appealing.
Explore the Cheongsong Art Museum, indulge in healthy cuisine at a nearby restaurant, and nourish both your body and mind.
