The Moaksan parking lot is spacious, allowing for a worry-free visit. There is also a parking area behind the Jeonbuk Provincial Art Museum, but it can get crowded on weekends. The characters in Gapbao's works display strange and ambiguous expressions. They reflect our own lives, where we often forget to check in on each other's feelings or ask ourselves, "What do I look like right now?"
In the place where sincere questions about oneself stop, loneliness seeps in, and the emotions we've ignored begin to take root like small seeds, growing into unique 'monsters' with special vitality.
Monster Breaking Through the Inner Self: Jeong Ji-sook
Artist Jeong Ji-sook expresses the emotions we've neglected as a 'living mass.' These masses represent the genuine feelings that have been ignored and have pushed their way out of our bodies as a form of life energy, resembling our own monsters.
At first, encountering these monsters may feel strange and uncomfortable, but upon closer inspection, you naturally come to feel that this mass is a 'part of me' that is alive and breathing.
The colorful monsters appear cute and friendly rather than scary, which intrigued the children. They resemble clouds or sheep, sparking various imaginations in each viewer. It felt like a special space that naturally stimulates children's creativity and curiosity.
Two Perspectives on Monsters: Yoon Tto, Kwak Soo-yeon
Yoon Tto warns that just as ancient people depicted fear and anxiety as ghosts or monsters, today's societal hatred and anxiety can create new monsters.
In contrast, Kwak Soo-yeon refers to these bizarre beings as 'companion monsters,' suggesting that instead of fearing or distancing ourselves from them, we should care for and live with them as friends. Both artists convey that monsters are not merely fearful entities but precious beings entwined with the complexities of our emotions and the world we live in.
Each painting contains the artist's unique ideas, naturally inviting viewers to pause and take a closer look. Friendly characters appear throughout, engaging children and allowing them to enjoy the exhibition in a fun and fascinating way.
Monsters Coexisting with Me: Kim Piri, Choi Se-yoon, Dexter Fernandez
Now, monsters become a part of my life, transforming into beings that coexist with others. Kim Piri reinterprets painful memories into heroic tales, changing them into images of guardian angels that soothe our wounds.
Choi Se-yoon reassembles forgotten memories, giving new expressions to emotions that were cast aside. Finally, Dexter Fernandez's massive graffiti wall illustrates how our individual monsters can come together to recognize a larger world, fostering solidarity with others and cultivating a broader, healthier emotional landscape.
