Embracing a New Chapter: The Rise of AI Education for the Middle-Aged

On a sunny morning in May, the 5th floor training room at Anyang City Hall was filled with laughter from middle-aged individuals embarking on a new learning journey.
In today's world, where one can plan trips, create art, and even compose music using just a smartphone, the middle-aged population of Gyeonggi Province stands at the forefront of this transformation.
On May 26th at 10 AM, Baby Boomer generations, who are embracing new challenges post-retirement, were fully engaged in the first day of a hands-on training session on generative AI.
The Gyeonggi Province initiative aims to bridge the digital divide and expand opportunities for social participation amidst the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
The training room was buzzing with enthusiasm as participants, aged 50 to 64, expressed their desire to learn about AI. This program was not just a series of lectures; it featured 'talent-sharing education' where experienced seniors shared their knowledge with peers.
Participants in the 'Three Days to Become an AI User' program were focused on learning new digital skills through hands-on practice. The program was led by those who had previously completed the AI leader training course.
As the instructor, Park Joo-hwan, noted, the atmosphere was more about support than competition, with participants helping each other and instructors providing individual attention.
The first day's special lecture focused on 'Smartphone AI Travel Guides,' where the training began with basic smartphone functions. As participants learned how to adjust text size, use voice search, and utilize photos, their engagement surged.
Following this, they practiced using generative AI to create travel itineraries, discover dining options, and even compile schedules, leading to expressions of surprise and excitement.
One participant remarked on how using AI, which they thought was only for their grandchildren, was a remarkable experience. They shared how learning something new post-retirement gave them confidence and a sense of reconnection with the world.
As the first day concluded successfully, anticipation grew for the upcoming classes. On May 27th, the second day will feature a session on 'AI Photography' led by instructor Kang Se-jin, focusing on image generation techniques.
On the final day, participants will explore music creation using the AI platform 'Suno,' along with generating emotional cards and character designs using Google Gemini.
This training goes beyond mere hobby classes; it aims to enhance the digital capabilities of the middle-aged and expand their social participation, addressing the information gap.
As AI technology becomes increasingly integrated into daily life, Gyeonggi Province and Anyang City are committed to supporting the middle-aged in adapting to these changes and discovering new opportunities.
