Gyeonggi-do is promoting the creation of barrier-free tourism cities to ensure mobility and enjoyment rights for vulnerable tourists.
This initiative focuses on removing physical obstacles and enhancing facilities so that pregnant women, people with disabilities, and the elderly can travel without discrimination.
Bucheon Nature Ecology Park is a prime example of a barrier-free healing spot, blending forests, flowers, museums, and botanical gardens.
Here are some essential details for your visit:
▪ Address: 660 Gilju-ro, Wonmi-gu, Bucheon, Gyeonggi-do
▪ Closed on: Every Monday, January 1st, and during Seollal and Chuseok (if Monday is a holiday, it will be closed the following day)
▪ Admission Fee: Adults (19 and older) 4,000 KRW, Middle and High School Students 3,000 KRW, Elementary School Students 2,000 KRW. Free for seniors 65 and older and people with disabilities; 50% discount for Bucheon residents.
▪ Parking Fee: 400-800 KRW for the first 30 minutes (200 KRW for every additional 10 minutes) / Daily parking pass 6,000-12,000 KRW.
Tip: From April to May, the flower exhibition makes parking very crowded, so it's advisable to use the designated temporary parking area.
Upon arriving at the park, the first thing that caught my eye was the sign for the disabled parking area right at the entrance.
There was ample space for disabled parking, conveniently located right in front of the building, minimizing the distance for those who need it.
During the spring flower exhibition, the ticketing area was bustling with visitors.
Here, the true value of a barrier-free tourist site shines through.
There is a separate entrance for seniors aged 65 and older, and a designated area for pregnant women, allowing them to enter without waiting in line.
The facilities are excellent, featuring accessible restrooms equipped with braille signage, as well as wheelchair and stroller rental services available inside the building.
With an ID, you can borrow equipment for up to two hours, making it easy to visit even without your own gear.
As I ventured deeper into the park, I noticed that all paths are designed without steps, creating a gentle slope throughout.
Amidst the blooming spring flowers, I spotted a cute sign saying, 'Spring Flower ASMR Playing.'
Not only is there visual beauty, but also sounds and scents to fully immerse yourself in nature.
All paths are smoothly paved, with plenty of resting spots along the way.
There are shops available for snacks as well.
One of the most impressive spots was the 'Bucheon Murungdowon Arboretum Everyone's Forest Path.'
This area, as the name suggests, allows both vulnerable pedestrians and citizens to safely enjoy the benefits of the forest.
The approximately 2km long deck path has a very gentle slope, making it easy for wheelchairs and strollers to move without difficulty.
It was truly remarkable that wheeled devices could access deep into the forest.
The 'Strong Baby Forest Experience Center' is also connected by a barrier-free path.
Children's laughter filled the air as families strolled leisurely with strollers around the charming huts and play areas.
Along the deck path, small bookshops and benches invite visitors to take a break and enjoy reading.
At the end of the deck path, there is an observation deck where you can get a panoramic view of the arboretum.
Seeing a senior in a wheelchair taking a family photo made me realize that barrier-free tourism is more than just paving paths; it is about creating memories for families.
From here, the vast area of the park unfolds like a panorama, showcasing the Nature Ecology Museum, botanical gardens, and agricultural relic exhibition halls.
