A Stroll Through Ulsan's Sunam Lake Park in Autumn
There's something about autumn that makes my heart feel particularly tender.
As I pull my collar tighter against the cool breeze, I often feel an urge to wander somewhere.
This feeling is even stronger during seasons like these, when the autumn foliage is at its peak.
So today, I want to share a story about Sunam Lake Park, a great place for a walk in Ulsan. It's so welcoming to find a place where you can easily connect with nature, even in the heart of the city.
Located in Nam-gu, Ulsan, Sunam Lake Park is a popular urban lake park beloved by locals. As a park developed around Sunam Reservoir, the walking paths that encircle the lake are especially charming.
The path itself isn't particularly challenging and consists of a roughly 3km circular course, making it easy for anyone to walk. It feels perfect for a light stroll, a date, or a walk with your dog.
Near the entrance, I unexpectedly came across a monument related to the Korean War. Getting closer, I saw the names of war victims inscribed on it. I took a moment to bow my head and remember their sacrifice with all my heart.
Right next to it is a Mugunghwa (Rose of Sharon) garden, created as an educational space to foster a love for the country. The fact that you can experience these historical traces right in the middle of a city walking path felt quite special.
Just a short walk further in, reeds spread out, allowing you to fully experience the feeling of autumn. Watching the reeds shimmer in the sunlight, I felt a deep sense of 'Ah, autumn has truly arrived.'
Sunam Lake Park is a place where the seasonal changes are very distinct. It showcases completely different charms each season: cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, and autumn foliage in fall.
That's why many people make a point of visiting every season.
Walking along the path, you'll naturally connect to a deck path over the lake, and the quality of this deck path was excellent. It feels like you're walking right on the lake, and the scenery is refreshingly open.
Rest areas are well-placed along the way, making it easy to sit down for a moment, gaze at the scenery, and take a break. The reeds visible on both sides of the deck further enhance the autumn atmosphere.
While walking, I noticed some unique sculptures. Getting closer, I realized they were works of art depicting dolphins.
Ulsan has a long and deep connection with whales, so I thought it was natural for these kinds of sculptures to be placed here.
I also saw several spots marked as photo zones. The locations seemed to clearly indicate 'taking a picture here will turn out beautifully,' so it's definitely worth stopping and capturing a memorable shot.
And surprisingly, I spotted a Haeparang Trail marker. Seeing that the Haeparang Trail, one of the long-distance walking trails, passes through here, I realized that Sunam Lake Park is more than just a simple walking space.
Numbered zone markers are also clearly displayed at intervals, which I learned is a system created to allow you to report your exact location in case of an emergency. The entire walking path felt neatly maintained, and I felt that the park was well-considered in terms of both safety and convenience.
The autumn foliage visible in the distance was truly picturesque. The yellow and red-tinged trees harmonized with the lake to complete the scenery. There are many places where your gaze will linger as you walk.
I also saw people walking their dogs from time to time.
As long as they're on a leash, you can walk with your dog, making it a great space for a light outing with your furry friend. The atmosphere was comfortable for people, animals, and nature alike.
Ulsan's Sunam Lake Park is a great place to walk any time of year, even without any special events, but I especially recommend visiting in the fall.
Just admiring the autumn foliage and taking a light walk can clear your mind. A short stroll can make your day feel richer. That's what's possible here.
