A Holiday in Nature: Exploring the Tteunbongsaem Ecological Park in Jangsu

This park, located around the first source of the Geumgang River, spans approximately 33 hectares and features various attractions, including the Geumgang Love Water Experience Center, a children's playground, an ecological greenhouse, a birch forest, and an ecological pond. Upon arriving at the Tteunbongsaem Ecological Park, you'll find a well-maintained parking area alongside an information desk. The spacious parking lot includes a resting pavilion, and the overall facilities have a clean and inviting feel.
This location is also part of the Jeollabuk-do Cheonrigil-Jangsu route. The Cheonrigil allows visitors to encounter the natural landscape and learn about the importance of nature through walking. It provides an opportunity to realize how much humans benefit from nature and appreciate the beauty of untouched natural environments.
Above the parking area, there is an ecological pond where aquatic plants thrive in a charming setting. The area is decorated with wooden sculptures, making it a pleasant spot for a leisurely stroll.
In one corner of the pond, a Eurasian Eagle-Owl resides. This owl is designated as a natural monument and is classified as a second-grade endangered species. It was rescued after being injured in a collision with a vehicle and cannot return to the wild due to the permanent loss of one wing.
The Geumgang Love Water Experience Center showcases information about Tteunbongsaem and ecological data related to Jangsu County. Visitors can learn about local mammals, the ecosystem of Jangansan Mountain, the bird species found in Jangsu, and the distribution of wildlife in the area.
Exhibits include charming birds such as the Eurasian Tree Sparrow, Common Kingfisher, and various species of owls, along with the sounds of birdsong.
The center also shares stories from history, including tales of notable figures and events in Jangsu, such as the stories of Lee Seong-gye, the founder of the Joseon Dynasty.
The second floor continues the exhibition, providing more detailed insights into natural ecology. Information about ants, their social structure, and various insect species is presented, along with a whimsical space depicting water flow.
A hands-on experience zone allows visitors to observe snake scales and frog webbed feet through a microscope, offering a closer look at the characteristics of these creatures.
Additionally, wildlife droppings from species like wild rabbits and squirrels are displayed, providing insights into their diets.
A cozy book cafe, bathed in warm sunlight, offers a perfect spot for reading.
Next to the Geumgang Love Water Experience Center, an outdoor playground is available for children. However, it is advisable to visit on days when the sun is not too harsh, especially in the summer.
The ecological greenhouse features native plants from the Baekdu-daegan and Geumgang regions. A charming spring and stream area showcases aquatic plants and ferns, including Geumgang violets and various wildflowers.
The path to Tteunbongsaem is lined with cherry blossom trees, and it’s a 1.26 km walk to the spring.
Along the way, you’ll find a cute birdhouse resembling Pinocchio’s nose and an art project called Arborial Echoes, which expresses the subtle sounds and vibrations of trees as an ecological art project.
The path features a tunnel covered in climbing plants and many small attractions to enjoy.
Throughout the area, you’ll spot charming clay figurines representing the nostalgic old village of Tteunbongsaem.
A resting area with a watermill is also along the way, home to the largest species of mountain frog.
Following the ecological trail leads to Tteunbongsaem, where the sound of flowing stream water adds to the serene atmosphere.
At the end of the trail, you’ll find the historic beacon site, which was used to signal emergencies at the border with smoke during the day and flames at night. Continuing along the forest path for another 550 meters will bring you to Tteunbongsaem.
This is Tteunbongsaem, where water springs forth to eventually form the Geumgang River after traveling 1,000 ri to places like Daejeon and Buyeo. The name Tteunbongsaem comes from a legend about a phoenix that flew to this spot. It is said that during a prayer ceremony, the founder of the Joseon Dynasty, Lee Seong-gye, witnessed a phoenix riding a rainbow into the sky, leading to the naming of this spring.
As you descend, you can stroll through the birch forest, which offers a healing experience with its white bark and green leaves.
The Tteunbongsaem Ecological Park is full of attractions, from the Geumgang Love Water Experience Center to the playground, ecological pond, Tteunbongsaem, and birch forest. Despite the hot summer, the shaded walking paths provide a comfortable environment to enjoy the beauty of nature.
