Our Village's Zanthoxylum schinifolium in Sanpo Village

In our village of Sanpo, we have the Zanthoxylum schinifolium tree.
It blooms with pale yellow-green flowers in May and June.
Bearing green fruits in July and August.
Before moving to the countryside,
I only knew about the Zanthoxylum piperitum tree (Sansho) on hiking trails.
And I used to add Sansho powder to Chueo-tang (loach soup) or freshwater spicy fish stew.
Coming down to Geochang-gun, I learned that Zanthoxylum schinifolium is called
Zephi or Jipi and is cherished as a spice.
Its flower meanings are sacrifice and surpassing one's teacher.
This year, there were more fruits than last year,
Ascending to the mountain in front of our house, I found
Several Jipi trees and Sansho trees.
I was delighted and picked or stripped the fruits between the thorns.
Even after picking quite a lot and trimming them,
They didn't weigh as much as I thought.
Still, I went to the Geochang Market Korean Agricultural Products section
And had the experience of trying to sell them.
The green Jipi below is what I trimmed.
The dried Jipi in the large bag.
Looks like it was professionally farmed and harvested.
I heard it is exported to Japan.
Benefits of Zephi:
1. Promotes digestion and protects the stomach
2. Anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects
3. Strengthens the immune system
4. Improves blood circulation
5. Antibacterial and antiviral effects
In spring, the tender Zephi leaves are seasoned
And eaten as a side dish or pickled.
When the fruits are crushed and mixed into kimchi,
We now enjoy it fragrantly.
We always add Jipi powder to oily and greasy foods such as Eotang (fish stew),
Chueo-tang, and spicy fish stew.
