Civilization: Era of Alliances - A Deep Dive into Strategy, Politics, and Alliance Warfare

Hello,
I'm Park Han-ryang, an influencer.
When I first started playing this game, I was under the impression that it was simply a "city-building game where you develop your civilization." However, my perspective shifted after the mid-game when the complexities of the alliance system, hero combinations, and resource flows became apparent. 'Civilization: Era of Alliances' is a game of politics, strategy, and timing. Especially after a certain point when full-fledged PvP and large-scale alliance wars begin, the game enters an entirely new phase. I want to share why 'Civilization: Era of Alliances' is so much fun and why I consider it one of the must-try SLG (Simulation Game) titles of 2025, delving into the essence of the game as I've experienced it.
"Resource Routines, Internal Affairs Heroes, and the Unseen Decisive Factors in War"
The growth of civilization is fundamentally built upon a resource structure of food, wood, stone, and gold. In the early stages, food and wood are consumed quickly, but as you expand your military power, you'll encounter bottlenecks with stone and gold. The core of this game isn't just about gathering a lot of resources, but about the accuracy of your decisions on 'when and what to prioritize'. Focus on food/wood for building upgrades, prioritize stone for fortifications and barracks upgrades, and strategically use gold for research, army upkeep, and acceleration purchases. It’s also crucial to continuously deploy heroes who provide production buffs to internal affairs. It’s not just combat heroes who secure victory. The unseen growth ultimately manifests as endurance in war. That balance is what keeps me playing the game.
‘Civilization: Era of Alliances’ quickly reveals that the core strength of your forces lies not in the individual performance of heroes, but in the synergy of hero combinations. Simply deploying heroes with high combat power won’t yield satisfactory results; you must calculate the harmony between each hero’s role, attribute matchups, and the timing of ultimate skill activations to truly determine victory or defeat.
Pericles, much like the symbol of democracy in ancient Athens, demonstrates excellent abilities in defensive operations and strengthening allies within the game. Pericles' Delian League skill can inflict one instance of damage on two random enemy heroes when conditional damage occurs, with all allies dealing damage to all enemy units five times, and allows the attacker to restore troops upon receiving damage while in a state of rebellion.
Gilgamesh, like the symbol of 'robustness' and 'heroic legends,' is a frontline hero equipped with both offense and survivability. In particular, his area-of-effect damage skills, coupled with enhancement effects or self-healing activated when his health falls below a certain level, make him excellent in sustained combat. Marcus Antonius, befitting a great Roman general, is a powerful hero specializing in siege warfare and commanding rallies. In addition to his basic combat abilities, he provides buffs that increase siege unit damage, boost troop attack power, and, in some cases, offer advantages during sieges, making him a crucial figure in alliance-level battles. Studying and deploying the unique characteristics of different heroes can significantly accelerate your growth and minimize wasted time, so keep that in mind.

Research Labs, various upgrades, and the overwhelming strength you feel within this busy environment
One of the most easily overlooked aspects for many players is the priority of Research Lab upgrades. On the surface, it may seem like a simple function of increasing scientific power and accumulating technology points, but in reality, it’s a core variable that fundamentally changes resource productivity and combat efficiency within the game. In other words, technology isn’t just a number; it’s a weapon that changes the landscape of the battlefield.
It gets more interesting as you progress through the ages!
Technology related to internal affairs is a crucial factor that determines the speed of early growth. To ensure the stability of resource acquisition, it’s effective to follow the order of improving resource gathering speed → increasing resource storage capacity → enhancing resource production efficiency. Properly establishing this structure can significantly reduce bottlenecks in building upgrades or troop production in the mid-game and beyond.
Meanwhile, military-related technologies are directly linked to increasing combat power. My recommended research priority is improving march speed → strengthening attack power → enhancing defense power → troop specialization technology. A fast march speed isn’t just a means to quickly occupy targets; it also provides an advantage in the timing battle and plays a significant role in avoiding unnecessary conflicts. Subsequent enhancements to attack power and defense power create stability in basic engagement capabilities, and troop specialization becomes the foundation for completing specific tactical combinations. If you compare and train various passive skills, enjoying the process of building your combat power one by one, you'll surely find the direction you need to change and how to proceed.
Above all, the true terror of technology in this game lies in the 'system structure that allows a small force to overwhelm a large one.' An opponent with superior technology can gain an advantage in combat even with fewer troops, and this technological gap acts as a decisive variable in determining victory or defeat, especially in PvP or rallied battles. Therefore, the Research Lab isn’t just a space to run when you have spare time; it’s a strategic asset that must be utilized according to a thoroughly planned 'upgrade schedule'.
To this end, I personally create an upgrade timetable in advance, reserving long-duration advanced research for right before bedtime, and conducting short-term research that can be completed relatively quickly frequently during the day. If you organize a routine like this, you can maximize the 24 hours of the day as a time for accumulating resources and technology, creating a long-term growth gap. In the end, technology is a weapon more terrifying than flashy battle effects. Only those who are prepared can properly unleash its power in actual combat.
PvP is a game of choice – only fight the wars you can win.
When you first encounter PvP in 'Civilization: Era of Alliances,' many players hesitate to attack. Worries such as "What if the opponent retaliates?" and "What if the resources I've worked so hard to collect are lost in an instant?" tend to take precedence. However, in this game, war isn't just a simple act of combat. It's a complex strategic tool that includes resource looting, psychological pressure, and diplomatic advantages, and sometimes the military threat itself becomes the basis for negotiations.
However, fighting recklessly isn't the answer. In this game, 'timing and goal setting' are more important than the 'art of fighting'. A typical strategy is to ambush surrounding cities that can be looted for the purpose of acquiring resources just before troop training is completed. Preemptively striking an enemy when their defenses are still weak allows you to secure maximum resources with minimal risk.
In addition, targeting the rear bases of an opposing alliance while they're engaged in a conflict with another alliance is also very effective. While a full-scale war is underway, the rear is naturally weakened, and quickly ambushing and retreating by exploiting this gap is also known as a 'guerrilla tactic'. In fact, such rear strikes can have devastating consequences that shake the entire war situation for the alliance.
When your alliance is preparing a rally attack, it's important to strategically deploy 'dealer-type heroes' and move with them, rather than blindly following along. Adding firepower to a front line full of tank-type heroes doubles the destructive power of the rally as a whole and allows you to achieve great results in a short amount of time. As such, the outcome of PvP isn't simply determined by the number of troops or hero levels. The compatibility between troop types, formation deployment, and, above all, coordination with alliance members are decisive variables. Especially in large-scale rally battles, who assists the alliance, when, and how, is more important than fighting well alone. In the end, PvP isn't a place to prove individual abilities; it's a moment when the entire alliance's cooperative structure is put to the test. In this game, the truly strong player isn't the one who fights well, but the one who leads the fight.
The Alliance System – The Real ‘Civilization’ Begins Here
In 'Civilization: Era of Alliances,' the alliance isn't just a chat room or a guild-level system for sharing items. In this game, the alliance itself is the axis of politics, the justification for war, and the central axis of all strategies. Rally attacks, territorial control, diplomatic negotiations, etc., that actually change the landscape of the game are all carried out at the alliance level, and the power of the 'group,' not the individual, determines dominance.
For example, deciding where to locate the alliance's central city, how to distribute and manage the surrounding resource hubs, and when and under whose command to conduct alliance rallies isn't just a matter of pressing a few buttons. It’s closer to 'real-time politics' that must be designed based on thorough strategy and coordination, and trust and communication among alliance members.
My alliance recently faced a crisis of conflict with a large force and engaged in strategic diplomacy to avoid a full-scale war. We concluded a ceasefire agreement with the opposing alliance on the condition of setting major resource areas in the western region as 'neutral zones,' which allowed both sides to secure a stable growth base without wasting their forces. Through this experience, I once again deeply felt that what’s more important than a strong military force is ultimately 'justification' and 'communication skills.' In this game, combat should be no more than a 'result' of strategy, and should not be the 'cause' itself. An unprepared fight leaves only consumption and ultimately returns as a risk to the entire alliance.
Civilization is no longer just a game of building cities.
‘Civilization: Era of Alliances’ is a game whose depth is revealed over time. In the beginning, you focus on upgrading buildings, collecting resources, and strengthening heroes, but after a certain point, the center of gravity of the game completely changes. Now, you enter a phase where you need to judge and choose with a broader and deeper perspective, from the operation of the alliance, synergy between heroes, diplomatic strategies, and even the timing of battles.
In this process, the player evolves from being a ‘gamer’ who simply gathers resources and builds buildings to becoming a true ‘leader’. Some fight at the front, some strategize in the back, and others persuade people and conduct negotiations. All of these actions form a living power structure within the game, ultimately influencing the rise and fall of a civilization.
It's not just about attacking; it's a combination of strategy, cooperation, timing, and psychological warfare, making siege operations a definitely attractive content for users who like the SLG genre.
Through this review, I hope I was able to provide some practical insights to those who want to enjoy 'Civilization: Era of Alliances' as more than just a simple strategy game. And I want to emphasize once again that the true value of this game lies in technology, strategy, and the communication and leadership that connect them. You'll be able to feel the charm that really immerses you more and more as you move from the early stages to the mid and late stages, beyond the Renaissance to the Industrial Age.
