King of Crabs: Discovering the Original Crab Restaurant in Gimpo

These days, crab restaurants have been popping up one after another in Gimpo, and now there are quite a few. But a friend told me that there's an original, a place that started it all. So, out of curiosity, I visited King's Legend. I heard it's the first restaurant specializing in snow crab and king crab in Gimpo's Janggi-dong, so I decided to see for myself what the original's class is like.
The location wasn't hard to find, as it's right near Janggi Station. It's about a 7-minute walk from the station, so it seems convenient for those using public transportation. I drove, and there was a dedicated parking space next to the restaurant, which was convenient. Being able to dine without worrying about parking is a significant advantage.
A large tank was located near the entrance, and king crabs, snow crabs, and lobsters were swimming around alive. It's fun to see them in person and choose one, and more than anything, it gave me a strong feeling that 'Ah, this place is confident in its freshness.'
Looking at the exterior of the building, it has a clean, modern building structure. Honestly, I expected an old-fashioned restaurant since it was called the original, but I liked that it felt sophisticated and modern.
Stepping inside, it was much larger than I expected. There seemed to be nearly 20 tables, but it still felt spacious and pleasant. The wood-tone interior and well-placed lighting created a great atmosphere. There were also private rooms, making it a good place for gatherings or company dinners.
Looking at the menu, the selection was more diverse than I thought. Of course, crustaceans like snow crab, king crab, and lobster are priced by market value, but there were also lunch menus and various other options available. I liked that they offered choices based on budget and taste.
We ordered snow crab and lobster.
The first thing that came to the table was the snow crab, and at a glance, it was neatly prepared. The body and legs were separated in an orderly manner, and the innards were served separately. I wondered if this attention to detail comes from experience.
The moment I picked up a leg and extracted the meat, I knew that it had a high yield. I've heard a lot lately about snow crab having little meat, but this Gimpo Janggi-dong restaurant was packed with it. The texture was soft, and the taste was sweet, making me want to keep eating it.
And when I took a spoonful of the innards, I was truly impressed. The savory and rich flavor spread throughout my mouth, and it's fantastic to dip the crab meat in it. There was no need for a separate sauce.
While I was busy eating the snow crab, the lobster arrived. Half of it was topped with cheese, and the other half was steamed plain, and the visual was overwhelming.
I took a bite of the cheese side first, and the savory cheese and chewy lobster meat felt like they were dancing in my mouth. The texture was definitely chewier than the snow crab, so it was fun to chew. The plain steamed side allowed me to fully experience the lobster's natural, savory flavor.
The lobster tail was served separately as sashimi. Eating it raw had a different charm. The chewy texture and fresh taste kept me reaching for more. People who like sashimi will absolutely love it.
Honestly, I don't usually expect much from side dishes at crustacean restaurants. But this Gimpo Janggi-dong restaurant was different.
The seaweed soup in the earthenware pot was refreshing and clean, making my stomach feel comfortable. It was seasoned just right too.
The live octopus was like a surprise gift. What restaurant gives you live octopus as a side dish? It was fun to dip it in gochujang (chili paste) and eat it.
The assorted seafood platter had a lot of variety, including sea squirt, shrimp, soy sauce marinated shrimp, horned turban shell, quail eggs, salmon ceviche, and silkworm pupae, but the presentation was really neat. I could feel that each item was carefully prepared. In particular, the salmon ceviche's sweet and sour sauce played a big role in stimulating my appetite.
With this kind of spread, I think the side dishes were of a quality that could be served as a separate menu item. It wasn't just the number of side dishes that was impressive, but it was clear that they put care into each one.
They also offer a discount for reservations and give out free ice cream before you leave, and I really liked these small touches. It was perfect for cleansing my palate after the meal, and I was impressed by their thoughtful service until the very end.
Although there are many snow crab restaurants in Gimpo now, the original, this Gimpo Janggi-dong restaurant, is definitely different. I could feel that they paid close attention to every detail, from the preparation to the cooking time. There's a reason why they've been in business in the same location for over 12 years.
