Found the Perfect Hongdae Grilled Eel Restaurant!
219 Donggyo-ro, Mapo-gu, Seoul
일심장어

I've truly found a great grilled eel spot in Hongdae!
Recently opened,
Ilsim Jang-eo(일심장어) (Hongdae Branch) was clean and the staff was exceptionally friendly.
I was surprised by how large the eel was!
It was a day for proper nourishment with *pungcheon* freshwater eel (antibiotic-free, Japonica) :)
This deliciousness definitely calls for a company dinner!
They also have group seating, making it suitable for various gatherings and year-end parties.

Headed out for some *bongyangshik* (nutritious food) in Hongdae!
These days, the daily temperature range is significant, and it's getting chilly.
I met up with a friend after a long time,
and we decided to go eat eel to boost our energy :)
I looked it up after meeting in Hongdae that day,
and the newly opened Ilsim Jang-eo caught my eye.
If you walk straight into Yeonnam-dong,
just 1-2 minutes past the always-crowded Najayeon Salt Bread bakery,
you'll find Ilsim Jang-eo Hongdae Main Branch.
They serve 100% Korean-grown Japonica *pungcheon* freshwater eel,
and their eel was
the largest I've ever had.
They have a special large size and a large size,
and I ordered two servings of the large size!
I wonder how big the special large size is?!
Interior of the Hongdae Eel Restaurant
Ilsim Jang-eo in Hongdae
had a great exterior,
but the atmosphere inside was seriously
amazing.
It wasn't the typical eel restaurant I knew,
but rather reminded me of a Western bar from a movie.
There were round sofa seats perfect for groups to chat,
which looked great!
It would be perfect for treating someone to something especially delicious
for a wedding shower or company dinner, don't you think?
There was also a window seat with an open view,
so we sat by the window.
Ilsim Jang-eo Menu
The menu had set menus
and you could choose between special large / large eel sizes.
For side dishes,
you could order Korean beef *yukhoe* (beef tartare), *yukhoe bibimbap* (beef tartare bibimbap),
*janchi guksu* (banquet noodles), *yeolmu kimchi guksu* (young radish kimchi noodles),
soy sauce egg rice, etc.
If you do a Naver review event,
you can get soy sauce egg rice for free.
They also had a variety of alcoholic beverages from *soju* to *Hwayo* (premium soju),
*bokbunja* (Korean black raspberry wine), etc.
Since it was a day to feast on eel after a long time,
we decided to mix *bokbunja* and *soju*.
Enjoying Grilled Eel in Hongdae
Immediately after ordering,
they showed us the eel that would be grilled that day
and pre-grilled it right in front of us.
My eel being grilled to a golden brown...
The various side dishes that came out
were neat and tidy.
They also provided *gim* (seaweed) to wrap the eel in,
and wrapping it in lightly grilled *gim* is delicious.
I would have been sad without soup,
so they also provided *doenjang-guk* (miso soup).
I asked them to put the *bokbunja* and *soju* we ordered in a kettle,
and they mixed it so tastefully and served it to us.
The owner is awesome.
After waiting a bit,
the glisteningly grilled eel and wood ear mushrooms
were served together.
It was pre-grilled,
so we only had to grill it a little,
and the staff grilled everything for us until the end,
so it was easy to eat at this Hongdae restaurant.
I quickly ate a piece that was cooked first,
and the eel was chewy, substantial,
tender, and had a savory flavor with the oil drained.
I loved it!
Eating it with a bit of wasabi on lightly grilled *gim* is also a treat!
The *bokbunja* + *soju* combination
went down so smoothly!
While eating, I also craved *yeolmu kimchi guksu* (young radish kimchi noodles),
so I ordered it :)
It was cool, spicy,
and addictively delicious.
This place is a *yeolmu kimchi guksu* 맛집!
And the real highlight was
the grilled wood ear mushrooms!
It was my first time eating it grilled like this,
and the texture was great and the taste was new.
I happily finished off two eels,
completing a satisfying dinner!
Ilsim Jang-eo Hongdae Review
I'm always happy to have eel as a nourishing dish,
and I felt even better eating eel elegantly
at such a clean and pretty eel restaurant.
I would like to recommend Ilsim Jang-eo
for various gatherings or company dinners in Hongdae.
