Delicious Grilled Mackerel at Jeju's Sonmatchon

During our summer vacation in Jeju, we took our parents on a trip to explore the beautiful island. One day, we went on an eastern tour and walked through the serene Saryeoni Forest Trail. After our relaxing hike, we rushed to a well-known restaurant in Jeju, Sonmatchon, to enjoy a hearty meal of grilled mackerel. My parents declared it the best meal of the trip!
The table was filled with a delightful spread, including braised dishes topped generously with bracken and fresh grilled mackerel from Jeju. Our family, known for our small appetites, devoured every last bite!
We started our day with breakfast at the hotel before heading to Saryeoni Forest Trail. The trail, surrounded by dense cedar trees, offered a refreshing escape from the city. As we walked along the well-maintained path, the stress and fatigue of urban life melted away, replaced by the soothing scent of damp earth and the invigorating phytoncides emitted by the trees.
After a leisurely stroll, our stomachs began to signal that it was time for lunch. We quickly searched for a nearby restaurant and found Sonmatchon, just a five-minute drive away, specializing in grilled mackerel.
Upon arriving at Sonmatchon, we were pleased to find ample parking, which was a relief given our experience with parking stress during our trip. The restaurant is conveniently located near other popular attractions like Eco Land and Sangumburi, making it an ideal dining spot after a day of exploration.
Inside, the restaurant was spacious and clean, with friendly staff who made us feel welcome. With four adults and two kids, we ordered a generous amount of food, including four portions of braised mackerel and three portions of grilled mackerel.
The side dishes were beautifully presented, reminiscent of home-cooked meals, and the flavors were comforting and authentic. The highlight was the braised bracken and lotus root, which were so delicious that even my mom, who usually cooks, wanted to know the recipe!
The braised mackerel was a standout dish, cooked with plenty of tender Jeju bracken that absorbed the flavorful seasoning perfectly. The visual appeal of the dish alone was mouthwatering, with large pieces of mackerel and radish inviting us to dig in.
We appreciated that the dish was not overly seasoned, allowing the natural flavors of the ingredients to shine through. After enjoying the meal, we felt satisfied without being overly stuffed.
The grilled mackerel, on the other hand, was a revelation. It was perfectly cooked, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The large portion was impressive, and we felt every penny spent was worth it. The restaurant had expertly removed all bones, allowing us to enjoy the meal without any hassle.
Overall, our lunch at Sonmatchon was fulfilling and delightful, leaving us with happy memories. If you're looking to savor authentic grilled mackerel in Jeju, I highly recommend visiting this restaurant for a truly enjoyable dining experience.
