It was a rainy night, and I was craving something soupy when I remembered Buk Udon House, where the udon broth was exceptionally delicious.
A friend enthusiastically took me there, saying it was a great restaurant, but it was break time. That's why I can't travel with people who aren't planners!
We changed our itinerary and visited a cafe first to enjoy the ocean view, then revisited after the break time ended.
I heard there's usually a wait even on weekdays, but we got in easily when we visited.
To be honest, since we were both hungry, I just wanted to go to another place.
It didn't have the trendy exterior of a modern restaurant that I know, and with multiple locations, it felt like a Busan-based franchise.
However, I waited a little longer at my friend's earnest request, as they really wanted me to try this place.
For reference, it's labeled as a separate building, but the main building and the separate building are combined, so you can think of it as one store. I didn't notice it then, but looking at the photos now, I see 'Owner Cheon Yong-geun' written on the sign.
I retract all my disparaging remarks about Buk Udon House. Any place with the owner's name on the sign is bound to be delicious.
The store was clean and bright. There were several seated and floor tables, and it was spacious with fast turnover.
It had the vibe of a local neighborhood restaurant where residents could come in comfortable clothes, quickly stop by, and get a quick meal.
You have to order one dish per person. I ordered the Spicy Flavor Set (₩11,500), and my friend ordered the Buk Katsu Set (₩15,000).
It was quite generous. Such a set for this price. In Seoul, it would already be over ₩20,000.
The udon toppings were also plentiful, from large pieces of radish and bok choy to finely chopped kelp.
Spicy Flavor Set
The neat and tidy presentation was nice, and the combination was perfect.
And that kimbap was crazy good (positive). It's a dried squid kimbap about the size of a mini kimbap. I took a bite and it was so delicious that I kept looking inside the kimbap. I raved to my friend about how it was so delicious even though there wasn't much inside. The perfect balance of sweet and savory and the right amount of spiciness were great.
It's been about two months since I visited when I'm writing this post, but if the kimbap is more memorable than the udon... Mr. Cheon Yong-geun might be a little sad..
Since it was spicy flavored udon, I expected something red with chili powder, but I was initially taken aback by the clear and transparent broth.
However, when you take a sip of the broth, it's quite spicy.
I should have had some drinks the night before. I heard the broth is made with Gijang kelp. It was a naturally deep and flavorful, refreshing broth without being artificial.
As I involuntarily exclaimed "Euh-huh, uh-huh" like an old man and slurped up the broth, my friend across from me looked increasingly pleased. I admit it. This is delicious.
The udon noodles themselves didn't feel special, but they stayed chewy until the end, which was great.
Buk Katsu Set
Unlike the fried items that came with the udon set, the fried items in the tonkatsu set definitely had a different, crispier batter.
In particular, the real cheese katsu wasn't too salty and was savory, and it was fun to see it stretch so well, so I enjoyed it.
My friend's top pick was the shrimp tempura.
If you want to enjoy a hearty and affordable meal in Gijang, I think you should consider Buk Udon House.
It was a satisfying meal, complete with a yogurt for a refreshing finish.
