Hello, this is Rakgung Papa.

Recently, I've been strangely craving jajangmyeon.

There are foods that stick in your mind once you think about them.

Coincidentally, my wife also expressed a desire for jajangmyeon, so I recalled a place I had saved for a while.

We visited Hongneunggak in Cheongnyangni.

I heard that the operating hours are short, making it important to time your visit well.

Nevertheless, it was a place I wanted to try at least once.

Hongneunggak in Gyeongdong Market

Address: 90, Yakhyeongsi-ro, Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul

Location: Near Gyeongdong Market in Cheongnyangni

Operating Hours: 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Closed: Mondays and Tuesdays

Last Order: 2:30 PM

Specialties: Ganjang Jajang and Tangsuyuk / Short operating hours

It's located in an alley near Gyeongdong Market, so it might be a bit confusing to find at first.

However, it's easy to spot since there are usually people queuing outside.

Atmosphere

My wife and I visited together.

We arrived during lunchtime, and fortunately, the wait wasn't long.

If you time it right, you can get in immediately, but if you're a bit late, you'll likely have to wait, so timing is crucial.

The restaurant is honestly not very spacious.

The tables are quite close together, giving it an old neighborhood eatery vibe.

Order

We ordered 2 servings of Ganjang Jajang and 1 Tangsuyuk.

There's no need to ponder the menu here.

Most people go for the Ganjang Jajang + Tangsuyuk combination.

The Ganjang Jajang comes with the noodles and sauce served separately.

At first glance, it looks a bit different from the typical jajangmyeon you see nowadays.

The color isn't as dark, and it doesn't have an oily feel.

Once you mix it and taste it, you'll notice it's definitely different in texture from regular jajangmyeon.

It's not overly sweet and has a clean taste overall.

Initially, it might surprise you, but as you eat, you get accustomed to it, and it feels much cleaner.

It doesn't leave a heavy feeling in your mouth afterward, making it easy to finish.

My wife also mentioned that it was different from what she usually eats, but she found it quite good as she continued.

Tangsuyuk

You must have Tangsuyuk with it.

It's crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, showing great fundamentals.

It doesn't come with a separate sauce but has a light coating that is sweet without being overwhelming.

It's a flavor that everyone will enjoy.

Since the Ganjang Jajang is on the lighter side, it balances well with the Tangsuyuk.

The portions are just right for two, making the Ganjang Jajang 2 + Tangsuyuk combination perfect.

The combination of Ganjang Jajang and Tangsuyuk is the safest choice.

Having just Ganjang Jajang might feel a bit bland, but the Tangsuyuk adds to the overall satisfaction.

Hongneunggak in Cheongnyangni is not your typical modern Chinese restaurant; it feels like a place that has maintained its old-fashioned style.

✔ Light Ganjang Jajang

✔ Well-prepared Tangsuyuk

✔ Short operating hours + potential wait times

It's a place that suits those who prefer clean and light flavors over intense tastes.

It is definitely different from the common jajangmyeon these days and worth trying at least once.
