A Taste of Tradition: Exploring Namdaemun's Kal-guksu Alley

Visit Date
August 25, 2019
I revisited Namdaemun's Kal-guksu (noodle soup) Alley.
I heard this alley opens as early as 6 AM, but our group visited a little after lunchtime.
While the YouTuber Tzuyang's visit made it even more famous, it's usually crowded with people.
It's very close to Exit 5 of Namdaemun Market.
It's always crowded, but that also means there are many affordable and delicious restaurants lined up.
It's a lively market alley. Since it was a weekday past lunchtime, it was less crowded than usual.
You can't go wrong anywhere; everything is delicious and similar.
We visited the restaurant right at the entrance, on the right side.
It was interesting to see foreigners enjoying kal-guksu and cold noodles. ^^
Less than ₩10,000 fills your mouth with happiness.
We ordered the Chapssal-bap (sticky rice) set...
They wrapped a chunk of sticky rice to take away,
and gave us another bowl of rice piled high.
They gave us bibimbap (mixed rice) vegetables to mix with the rice,
and kal-guksu, cold noodles, and doenjang-guk (soybean paste soup) were served as a bonus.
I couldn't eat everything, so I packed some more sticky rice to take home.
Namdaemun Market's Kal-guksu Alley is a place where you can truly experience the taste of Korea and the vibrant atmosphere of a traditional market food street.
