Happy moment

It had been a while since my last visit, and Jeju Island's streets had changed quite a bit. But some things remain, like the incredible mackerel sashimi restaurant I want to introduce you to. This restaurant near Jeju Airport has been serving the same delicious flavors in the same spot for years.

1. Wondam

Address: 13, Donggwang-ro 1-gil, Jeju-si, Jeju-do, South Korea

Hours: Daily 16:00 - 00:00 (Last Order 23:00), Closed Tuesdays

Menu: Mackerel Sashimi + Braised Cutlassfish (Large) 140,000 KRW

The table setting is simple and clean. The focus is on the essentials, which made me excited for the meal.

Located just 10 minutes from Jeju Airport, this restaurant specializes in mackerel sashimi. There's a public parking lot right next door, and the restaurant covers the parking fee, making it very convenient.

Peeking into the fish tank next to the entrance, I saw several sleek mackerel swimming energetically. The clear, transparent water was reassuring.

As soon as you enter, you'll see a large sign with tips on how to best enjoy mackerel sashimi. The owner proudly states that fresh, live mackerel never tastes fishy.

The main dishes, featuring mackerel and cutlassfish, are priced according to the number of people. Overall, the prices are reasonable, so ordering wasn't a burden.

The side dishes at this Jeju Airport restaurant were set on the table one by one. The substantial and practical presentation showed great care.

Each person receives their own individual servings of vinegared red-pepper paste, soy sauce, and a special sauce. You can always get more from the self-service bar.

Following the recommended way to eat it, we added shredded onions and chives to the sauce. The slightly spicy and pungent onions created a great harmony.

The round rice balls looked like something out of a cartoon. They were pre-seasoned and delicious on their own.

The vegetable pancake, included in the set menu, had crispy edges and a wonderfully chewy center.

It seemed like they added curry powder to the batter, giving it a subtle aroma and a more sophisticated flavor.

This is grilled mackerel with the bones removed. The surface of the fish was golden and glistening, full of juicy flavor.

I took a small piece of rice ball, topped it with mackerel, and wrapped it in seaweed. It's a universally appealing side dish that even kids would love.

All the dishes we ordered were ready. The table was completely full, with no space left.

I carefully picked up a slice of mackerel sashimi, neatly arranged, and dipped it in vinegared red-pepper paste. The chewy texture filled me with bliss.

Because they catch the fish from the tank right after you order, there was no fishy taste at all. The owner's recommendation of eating it with the special sauce and onions was also fantastic.

The sashimi, dipped in soy sauce and wrapped in plain seaweed, had a dense texture and was incredibly satisfying to chew.

Adding wasabi created a magical, refreshing sensation in my mouth, instantly widening my eyes. I enjoyed experimenting with different sauces to avoid monotony.

The braised cutlassfish from this Jeju Airport restaurant was met with cheers when it arrived. The spicy aroma made me look forward to it even before tasting it.

Because the Jeju cutlassfish are so large, they were braised in chunks. The seasoning had permeated every part, so every bite was perfectly seasoned.

The white fish had turned reddish from the absorbed seasoning, making it look even more appetizing. I couldn't help but marvel at the deliciousness.

As expected of a "rice thief," it was perfect with rice. The salty-spicy seasoning was subdued, allowing me to savor each grain of rice.

The braised radish at the bottom was firm but melted in my mouth, becoming soft and tender.

For the final course, we were served a clear fish soup as a complimentary dish. The earthenware pot, bubbling hot, was filled with generous ingredients.

The broth, made by simmering the fish for a long time, was surprisingly rich. The soft fish meat was broken down almost beyond recognition, making it easy to eat with a spoon.

Takeout is available from 16:00 to 23:00, which are the same as the business hours. This Jeju Airport restaurant is closed every Tuesday, so be sure to check before you visit.
