A Retro Korean Pub Experience: Yeonnam Jumak 1987 in Hongdae

After a long time, my boyfriend and I went on a date in a neighborhood other than Hongdae. To wrap up our date, we looked for a restaurant and pub, and that's how we found Yeonnam Jumak 1987.
The entrance to the restaurant is in two places, front and back. We initially went to the back, but the restaurant was full, so we were guided to the front entrance where the waiting list was.
We visited around 9 PM on a Saturday night and had to wait about 30 minutes before we could enter. While waiting, I searched on Naver and found that it's a popular Hongdae restaurant with a usual wait.
Fortunately, there were seats in front of the restaurant where we could wait comfortably.
Even though it was late, the place was bustling with people. It seems it's also famous among foreigners, as many of the waiting customers and some at the tables inside were foreigners.

Yeonnam Jumak 1987 has a cute menu designed to match its concept.
Gopdori Tang ( 곱도리탕 ) and Kkotdori Tang ( 꽃도리탕 ) are so popular that they are considered the restaurant's signature dishes. The set menu includes jeon (Korean pancake), which would be great to order if you're visiting with three or more people.
Of course, two people can definitely handle it, but since it was so late, we passed on it out of conscience. Haha.
Besides that, they also had Bulgogi Shabu Shabu, Mala Gopdori Tang, Kimchi Stew, Snail Salad with Mung Bean Jelly, Yukjeon (Beef Pancake), Chicken Feet Pancake, Potato Pancake, Kimchi Pancake, and various other main dishes, as well as light side dishes.
As a Korean pub, they had a wide variety of makgeolli (Korean rice wine) that pair well with the food!
There were so many dishes and makgeolli that I wanted to try, but it was too much for just the two of us. I hope to visit with friends in the future and order a bunch of different things.
We wanted to enjoy a proper drink, so we ordered Slow Village Makgeolli for 8,000 won. I often buy this to drink at home. It's heavy and doesn't have much carbonation or sourness, which I like.

The dishes we ordered started to come out one by one.
We were so hungry, and it was almost 10 PM when we finally ate dinner, so we ordered the old-fashioned lunchbox.
When I told him to shake the lunchbox, he was like, "Who shakes an old-fashioned lunchbox like that...?" I was like, "Huh...? Haven't you seen the cartoon 'Black Rubber Shoes'?"
After I showed him, he finally shook it properly, haha.
He said he didn't know because he wasn't from the lunchbox generation. Well, if he's not, then I'm definitely not!
Anyway, the old-fashioned lunchbox was complete. I was so hungry that I devoured it, and it was so delicious...
It was like we were both Ki-young when he first ate a banana and was so moved that he cried. We exclaimed with admiration with every bite of the old-fashioned lunchbox, haha.

And this acorn jelly! It was also delicious!
The price is cheap at 8,500 won, the portion is really generous, and it's the best side dish for makgeolli.
We almost finished a whole bottle of makgeolli with just the side dishes before the main dish even came out.
Today's main menu has arrived! I was deciding between the Cheese Potato Pancake and the Meat and Seafood Pancake, but I ordered the Meat and Seafood Pancake.

It wasn't quite what I had imagined, but it tasted great.
Instead of putting the meat in the center, I think it would have been better if they had mixed the meat into the batter and then cooked it, just my opinion. Hehet...
But the taste is really good, so if you like seafood pancakes, you should definitely try it.
Next is the Babamba Makgeolli that makes you wonder who would buy it. LOL.
(Babamba Makgeolli 8,000 won)
I ordered this because my boyfriend's favorite ice cream is Babamba. And it really tastes like Babamba!
But you can buy Babamba for 700 won at ice cream discount stores these days. This bottle costs 8,000 won, so with that money, I'd rather buy 10 Babambas, haha.
Anyway, with the taste, atmosphere, and everything else, this is a Hongdae restaurant that can't fail. I recommend it to those looking for a Yeonnam-dong pub where the drinks taste great.
