A Memorable Omakase Experience at Sushi Do in Gangnam

This post is a subjective review based on a meal voucher provided by the restaurant.
Recently, my husband and I visited Sushi Do, a well-known sushi restaurant in Gangnam, craving an omakase experience after a long time. As I've gotten older, I've found myself preferring a variety of small dishes over large buffet spreads. It seems my tastes have changed. Sushi Do has been talked about for its reasonable omakase offerings in Gangnam, and I had wanted to visit for a while. This time, we finally made a reservation.
Location & Hours
Address: 101, 662 Gaepo-ro, Gangnam-gu, Seoul
Hours: 11:30 AM - 9:30 PM (Break Time: 2:30 PM - 5:00 PM)
Sushi Do is about a 5-minute walk from Daechung Station, making it quite accessible. The location is convenient for meetings in Gangnam, and it felt like there were a steady stream of customers even on weekday evenings.
Since parking is prioritized for residents on the street side, it’s recommended to park behind the building.
Reservations
Reservations are essential for most omakase spots in Gangnam, including Sushi Do. We made a reservation in advance. Common methods include using Catch Table or phone reservations. Especially during dinner hours, seats fill up quickly, so it's advisable to book ahead for weekends or popular times.
Sushi Do offers lunch and dinner reservations, divided into three parts each, with meals lasting about 50 minutes. The dishes are prepared according to the reservation time, and they serve the courses accordingly.
In the past, omakase in Gangnam was popularized by being corkage-free, but now a fee of 10,000 won per bottle is charged. However, the beverage selection has expanded.
The ambiance of the restaurant is surprisingly comfortable, designed to help diners focus on their meals. The counter seating is in an L-shape, and there is space to store coats and personal belongings.
Due to the nature of omakase, the seating arrangement focuses on the counter, allowing the chef to serve sushi right in front of you. We sat at the counter, and I personally think the atmosphere is much better there. Watching the sushi being made and eating it fresh is a unique experience.
Beginning the Omakase Course
Since we made a reservation, our seats were ready. The table was set with plates, water, pickled ginger, and fresh wasabi. As it’s an omakase, it’s important to arrive on time. A menu was provided for drinks and additional items. The course began slowly after we were seated.
The first dish was miso soup, which complemented the sushi perfectly. The omakase is served at the pace of the diners. We had reserved the first part of the dinner course, and it was quiet, allowing us to concentrate on the food.
The first course included sashimi and sushi, featuring flounder and flounder fin served with a bonito jelly. We were recommended to eat it with our hands. I thought it might be fishy, but it turned out to be delicious and crispy.
Unlike typical sushi that comes on a single plate, Sushi Do's special ingredients are presented in sequence, enhancing the dining experience.
After this, sushi began to be served one piece at a time, true to the omakase style. The memorable selections included flounder, sea bream, tuna (loin and belly), sweet shrimp, horse mackerel, scallops, and eel. The tuna was quite tender, and the sweet shrimp had a delightful sweetness, which left a strong impression on me. The rice portion was just right, making it easy to enjoy overall.
They asked if the rice portion was suitable, allowing for adjustments. I opted for the standard portion, while my husband requested a smaller serving since he had just eaten.
The sushi was beautifully prepared, with fresh flounder topped with wasabi and soy sauce. I loved how each piece was crafted with care, showcasing the chef's pride in their work.
Ending the Course
For dessert, we had gyoku (egg castella), which was so soft that I wished for more than just one bite. However, we were already full from the omakase, so we didn't order anything extra.
The final touch was handmade ice cream, made from sweet red bean paste. It was refreshing, with a delightful texture from the red beans.
My husband ordered additional futomaki and yellowtail after the omakase was finished, which was nice as it allowed us to enjoy our favorite dishes more.
Overall Impression
Among omakase options in Gangnam, the atmosphere and value for money were quite satisfying. It felt more casual than overly extravagant, making it a great spot for a date or a meal with a partner. If you're looking for an omakase experience in Gangnam, I highly recommend visiting Sushi Do.
