A Delightful Tonkatsu Experience Near the Gwangju Biennale: 'The Man Who Makes Tonkatsu'

Hello, I'm CHU!
Crispy fried breading with thick and juicy meat inside – isn't Tonkatsu a universally loved dish?
Today, I visited 'The Man Who Makes Tonkatsu' Yongbong Biennale Branch near the Gwangju Biennale, known for its generous portions and delicious taste.
I was really looking forward to this place because it offers 100% handmade Tonkatsu and a salad bar where you can enjoy unlimited bread and soup. Let me share my honest review of filling up on delicious Tonkatsu!
Located near the main entrance of the Gwangju Biennale, 'The Man Who Makes Tonkatsu' is on the 3rd floor of a neat building, making it easy to spot from afar. The sophisticated and modern exterior gave it a vibe of a popular restaurant, raising my expectations.
Right next to the restaurant, there's a very spacious private parking lot, which was really convenient. Being able to visit without worrying about parking is one of the biggest advantages of this place.
The entrance is decorated with fancy lighting and a clean sign, making you feel like you're entering a restaurant. It was nice to see the phrase 'Western-style Dining' after a long time!
The opening hours and break time were posted at the entrance. Next to it, the best menu items were introduced with photos, making it easy to choose even if it's your first visit.
‘The Philosophy of Donkkanam’ poster explained that they insist on using 100% handmade fresh breadcrumbs and the most delicious thickness. I could feel their pride and dedication to the food, which made me trust them even more.
There were signboards with appetizing photos of the signature dishes at the entrance. Just looking at the pictures made my mouth water, and I was happily torn between what to eat as I went in.
Around the entrance, there was a waiting area for customers. Various signs indicating business hours, break times, and popular menu items were helpful for checking information before entering.
I guess it really is a famous restaurant! It was even featured on SBS 'Live Broadcast Today.' Seeing the broadcast appearance framed on the wall made me even more excited about the taste.
The interior was much larger and more pleasant than I expected, and the warm wood-tone interior created a comfortable atmosphere for dining.
There were various seating options, including tables for four and seats perfect for group gatherings, so I thought it would be comfortable for any kind of gathering.
I especially liked the window seats. Being able to eat while enjoying the warm sunlight coming through the window created a really romantic atmosphere, perfect for a date.
One of the biggest advantages of 'The Man Who Makes Tonkatsu' is the self-bar. You can enjoy unlimited delicious soup, various side dishes, and even bread, making it really generous.
The self-bar had creamy soup, which goes perfectly with Western-style Tonkatsu, kept warm. It's really convenient to bring basic side dishes such as kimchi, pickled radish, and pickles to your liking to relieve any greasiness.
I completed my basic table setting with soup and side dishes from the self-bar. Sprinkling some pepper on the savory soup and enjoying it as an appetizer made me even more excited about the main menu.
Ordering was easy with the kiosk installed at each table. They even provided tips on how to make 'Katsu Sandwiches' with the Tonkatsu, making the meal more enjoyable.
The menu I ordered was Western-style King Tonkatsu and Salad Tonkatsu!
Finally, the old-fashioned Western-style King Tonkatsu came out. The visual of the plate filled to the brim with plenty of sauce looked really appetizing.
The breading was really crispy, and the thick meat was tender, allowing me to truly taste the flavors of classic Western-style Tonkatsu.
The taste was a perfect blend of crispy outside and thick inside Tonkatsu with a sweet, nostalgic sauce. It's a classic flavor that everyone, young and old, will love.
This was the Salad King Tonkatsu, which came with a mountain of fresh salad and cheese piled on top of the Tonkatsu. I was amazed by the refreshing and generous appearance.
Eating the crispy Tonkatsu with the crunchy vegetables was really refreshing without being greasy. It seems like the best menu when you want to enjoy a hearty but light meal.
On one side of the salad bar, there was a bread corner with bread, a toaster, and strawberry jam. Being able to enjoy toasted bread as much as you want is really great.
The real secret tip here is to make your own 'Katsu Sandwich'. If you put Tonkatsu and salad in well-toasted bread, you'll have a uniquely delicious sandwich.
To make the Katsu Sandwich, I prepared toasted bread and strawberry jam from the bread corner. All you need is leftover Tonkatsu, salad, and pickles.
The way to make it is really simple. Spread strawberry jam on toasted bread, and then stack Tonkatsu, salad, and pickles on top.
The Katsu Sandwich, which tastes even better because I made it myself, is complete. The combination of sweet jam and crispy Tonkatsu is a surprisingly good delicacy.
There was information about the Naver receipt review event on each table. If you participate briefly, you'll receive a complimentary glass of refreshing grapefruit ade, so be sure to participate.
The handmade Tonkatsu I tasted at 'The Man Who Makes Tonkatsu' today was a really satisfying meal. The quality of the Tonkatsu, which is crispy on the outside and moist on the inside, as well as the salad bar where you can enjoy soup and bread to your heart's content, made it a great value for money.
In particular, the Tonkatsu sandwich that you bake and make yourself was a delicacy that you must enjoy. The spacious and comfortable atmosphere makes it a great place to date with friends or lovers, or to dine out with family. If you are looking for a proper handmade Tonkatsu restaurant in Yongbong-dong, Gwangju, I highly recommend 'The Man Who Makes Tonkatsu'!
