A Culinary Journey to BanGye-ri: Jeju Kilogram, a Must-Visit Restaurant in Wonju

Not long ago, after visiting the BanGye-ri Ginkgo Tree with friends, we stopped by a famous restaurant in Wonju, BanGye-ri. It's called Jeju Kilogram, and it's known for providing the ultimate meat experience with Jeju black pork and Hoengseong Hanwoo (Korean beef). I hope it becomes widely known.
Address: 2nd Floor, Donghwa Building, 81 Wanggeon-ro, Munmak-eup, Wonju-si, Gangwon-do
Hours: Daily from 11:30 AM to 10:00 PM
Jeju Kilogram is reputed to be one of the top 3 meat restaurants in Wonju. It's also conveniently located near a golf course, making it easy to visit after a round of golf.
With attractions like the Sogeumsan Suspension Bridge, Oak Valley, and GanHyeon Tourist Site nearby, it's also a perfect addition to a travel itinerary. As we followed the navigation to the restaurant, the signboard came into view at once.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by a vast parking lot. As we entered, the owner welcomed us with a warm smile.
The interior is spacious and clean, with group seating available. It would be a great venue for year-end parties and other gatherings.
The stainless steel tables, a staple in Korean BBQ restaurants, were impressively shiny and reflective.
We ordered both the black pork set and the Hoengseong Hanwoo set, and soon we were presented with a stunning spread.
What sets this restaurant apart is that they use bamboo charcoal instead of regular charcoal. This is said to lock in the meat's juices and enhance its flavor.
I usually don't even bother with soybean paste stew if it's bland, but this one had a rich and savory flavor.
I was tempted to order a bowl of rice to mix in, but I resisted in order to conquer all the meat we had ordered.
The black pork set was visually appealing from the start. The owner, who is from Jeju Island, sources the black pork directly from the island.
The black pork shoulder butt was a cut that really highlighted the inherent flavor of pork. Many people consider it the most "pork-like" flavor.
The black pork belly was characterized by its unique savory taste and rich meat aroma. I was looking forward to the moment when the juices would burst forth with each chew.
We immediately placed the black pork on the grill and started cooking. In the process, I could feel a distinctive aroma.
I wasn't sure if it was thanks to the bamboo charcoal or the unique aroma of the black pork, but it was certainly enough to stimulate my appetite.
It was fun to grill the thick pork belly to our liking. It made me feel like it was worth the trip to come all the way to Wonju BanGye-ri.
The pork belly had an excellent balance of fat and lean meat. It was chewy and perfect for enjoying a satisfying texture.
Meanwhile, the special shoulder butt was juicy and had an outstanding savory flavor. I couldn't stop smiling while eating it.
And the anchovy sauce, developed after much research, was a highlight of this restaurant. As it simmered, the fishy taste disappeared, turning into a savory sauce that enhanced the flavor of the pork even more.
The Hanwoo is 100% Hoengseong Hanwoo, directly sourced and provided to customers. I had high expectations because it is famous for its freshness and quality, and it lived up to its reputation.
The fresh, bright red color never got old, no matter how many times I looked at it. First, I placed a large chunk of sirloin directly on the grill.
In addition, we decided to add a cut that looked like chuck flap tail. The marbling was truly a sight to behold.
As the savory aroma spread, I couldn't help but tap my feet. Grilling it quickly over charcoal not only made it smell great, but also allowed us to enjoy the juicy texture.
Perhaps it was because it was grilled over high-quality bamboo charcoal, but the heat was exceptional. Even to my untrained eye, it was clear that this restaurant used high-quality charcoal.
After grilling the sinews until they were cooked through, I cut them into bite-sized pieces. The marbling and thickness of the sirloin were once again highlighted.
After grilling the surface without overdoing it, I moved it to the edge and started eating. I didn't want the delicious meat to become tough.
Because the meat was so fresh, it tasted pleasantly sweet even without any sauce. It was a moment when I realized the class of Hoengseong Hanwoo once again.
I finished every last piece with various side dishes without getting tired of it. I highly recommend this restaurant in Wonju BanGye-ri, where you can enjoy flavorful meat grilled over bamboo charcoal.
