A Culinary Journey Near Saryeoni Forest Path in Jeju

Jeju Island is known for its well-developed local cuisine, utilizing famous local specialties. I visited a restaurant near the Jeju Saryeoni Forest Path, where the clear air and natural flavors were well-preserved thanks to the surrounding oreums (volcanic cones). The quality of the ingredients was excellent, and the chef's skill created a truly memorable taste, living up to the positive reviews.
1. Gyoraehyang
Address: 638 Bijarim-ro, Jocheon-eup, Jeju-si, Jeju-do
Hours: Daily 09:00 - 20:30 (Closed every Thursday)
Menu: Braised Cutlassfish (4 servings) 85,000 KRW, S솥밥 (Stone Pot Rice) 2,000 KRW (Grilled cutlassfish or mackerel served with cutlassfish stew)
The meal included a generous selection of main dishes and side dishes. While the dishes themselves might be familiar, the restaurant's cozy and welcoming atmosphere made it special.
The restaurant's exterior resembled a quaint countryside eatery. A large tree at the entrance served as a focal point.
The parking lot, located along the road, was quite spacious, making it convenient to visit by rental car.
Inside, the walls were covered with autographs of celebrities, giving the impression that it's a popular spot for famous people.
Stone pot rice can be ordered for an additional 2,000 KRW. It's best to order in advance as it takes time to prepare.
The interior was furnished with tables and chairs, creating a refreshing atmosphere. The wood tones added a natural touch.
A variety of basic side dishes were served first, mainly consisting of fresh vegetables with excellent crispness.
Additional side dishes like bracken and braised lotus root were also provided, which I enjoyed. They were so delicious that I could eat them on their own.
I could see the stone pot rice cooking machine in the kitchen. The savory aroma filled the air.
When I opened the lid of the stone pot, the rice grains were glossy and glistening. The freshly cooked rice was even more appetizing.
After scooping out the rice, I poured water into the pot. The warm, starchy water from the scorched rice (nurungji) is another highlight of stone pot rice.
The grilled mackerel was served on a large plate and was incredibly big. It was a perfect side dish.
The flesh was plump and juicy. The contrasting textures of the oily, dark-fleshed fish and the moist meat were delightful.
I placed a piece of fish on top of the rice and enjoyed it with the side dishes. The savory and spicy flavors complemented each other perfectly.
The sea urchin seaweed soup was clear and clean. The broth was refreshing and showcased the chef's culinary expertise.
When I scooped it up with a ladle, plenty of sea urchin roe came up. They were generous with this precious ingredient.
Eating it with rice warmed me up from the inside out. Even without being a special dish, it felt like a nourishing meal.
The main dish, braised cutlassfish, was generously filled with chunks of fish in a flavorful sauce. It was cooked just right, resulting in a tender and warm dish.
Lifting a piece with a ladle revealed a thick and meaty cutlassfish. The cutlassfish here was different from what I had at home.
The flesh was white and tender, and the sauce had penetrated deep inside.
It was easy to debone, so I took a large piece and put it in my mouth. The subtle yet savory flavor was amazing.
Inside, there was also bracken, a local specialty of Jeju Island. The chewy texture, similar to meat, was surprisingly delicious.
The vegetables were cooked until tender, making the broth delicious and the vegetables themselves a treat. The unique sweet and refreshing flavor made it a true rice thief.
The price was reasonable for a family of four. The various fish dishes and side dishes were perfect to eat with rice. I highly recommend this restaurant near Saryeoni Forest Path, especially if you're traveling with elderly family members.
