A Culinary Journey in Jeju: Exploring Dol Dam Black Pork

During a 4-day trip to Jeju, after visiting various attractions and cafes, a thought struck me: it was time to indulge in some good food.
The first dish that came to mind was black pork. After searching for restaurants, I decided to visit Dol Dam Black Pork, which is known for its exquisite black pork.
As I drove towards the restaurant, I noticed that this area has many great dining spots in Jeju. With a lively atmosphere at night, it attracts both tourists and locals alike. Among the many restaurant signs, Dol Dam Black Pork stood out!
This place had excellent reviews, and I believe in following the crowd when it comes to food; there’s usually a good reason why people flock to certain spots.
Upon entering, I was surprised by the spacious interior, which felt larger than expected. With seating available on the second floor, it never felt overcrowded, and the table spacing allowed for comfortable dining.
While waiting, I noticed a meat aging refrigerator in the corner, showcasing vibrant cuts of meat with a clear distinction between fat and lean portions, which heightened my anticipation.
The side dishes were also impressive. The white kimchi was refreshing and slightly sweet, perfect for cleansing the palate. The meljeot, a dipping sauce unique to Jeju, added a deep flavor that I highly recommend!
Among the side dishes, the seasoned minari (water parsley) had a refreshing aroma that cleaned my palate. The light white kimchi also helped to refresh my mouth without overpowering the taste of the meat.
After a short wait, the main dish, aged black pork, arrived. The cuts were thick and showcased the unique style of Jeju black pork. Even before grilling, the visual appeal was impressive.
The staff grilled the meat right at our table, checking the timing carefully. Thick cuts can be tricky to cook, but having an expert handle it made it much easier.
Initially, they crisped the skin, and the sound of the meat sizzling was delightful. Hearing that sound made my hunger grow even more.
As I took my first bite, a nutty flavor burst forth, followed by a subtle sweetness. Despite being rich, it was not overwhelming, and the balance was excellent.
The unique aroma of Jeju black pork was distinctly present, and the flavor of the meat itself was pronounced. The meljeot, warmed beside the grill, enhanced the umami when dipped, complementing the meat without being overly salty.
The texture of the neck meat was particularly impressive, firm yet tender with a satisfying juiciness. The pork belly had a chewy texture that was delightful, with a rich nuttiness.
Each cut had a different texture, making the meal enjoyable and highlighting why black pork is so sought after.
The combination of juicy black pork and Hallasan soju was simply divine!
I also ordered some yeolmu guksu (young radish noodles), which had a sweet and tangy broth that was refreshing after the rich meat.
Taking a bite of the yeolmu guksu followed by a piece of black pork created a delightful balance, making me crave more.
The porridge made from the shellfish had a rich flavor, and its crispy texture added to the dish's appeal.
Overall, Dol Dam Black Pork was not only exceptional in its main offerings but also in its side dishes. After finishing the meal, stepping outside into the cool night air left me feeling satisfied and happy.
During my 4-day trip to Jeju, I highly recommend experiencing the black pork at Dol Dam Black Pork.
