Geumdot: A Must-Visit Black Pork BBQ Restaurant in Jeju Seongsan!

A friend recommended a black pork BBQ restaurant famous for its unique pre-cooking method. I was so excited to try Jeju-style black pork BBQ during this trip!
I usually love meat, but this unique cooking method at Geumdot was a first for me. I'm excited to share my experience with you.
1. Location & Address of Geumdot
Geumdot, which I visited that day, is conveniently located next to Seongsan Ilchulbong (Sunrise Peak).
It's a large building with a tall sign, making it easy to spot from afar.
The restaurant is open daily from 11 AM to 10:30 PM, with last orders at 9:30 PM. They are open year-round, which is a great advantage.
The anticipation of watching the perfectly cooked black pork was exciting. Just watching the cooking process, timed perfectly, stimulated my appetite.
The restaurant's location is excellent, making it easy to find. The transportation is well-established for tourists to visit without any difficulty.
A unique feature of this restaurant is the separate pre-cooking area and the self-service bar. These aren't commonly seen in typical Korean BBQ restaurants, which piqued my curiosity.
The side dishes were all handmade and generously served, which was very satisfying.
After being seated, I looked at the menu. I ordered the fundamental black pork first, and then various meal options caught my eye. The prices were reasonable, and the wide selection made me happy I chose this place.
2. Geumdot's Table Setting
The various side dishes on the table looked fresh and clean. Each one appeared carefully prepared, raising my expectations even before tasting them.
The side dishes, piled high in bowls, captivated me with their unique flavors as soon as I took a bite. I was touched by the thoughtful arrangement of side dishes that complemented the meat, especially the radish salad.
Among them, the pickled radish was the most popular. The crunchy texture and refreshing burst of flavor with each bite perfectly cut through the richness of the pork, and I remember refilling it several times.
I also tried the seasoned green onion salad (pajeori). The spiciness of the green onions was well-balanced, and the fresh aroma remained, proving it to be a must-have side dish for a Korean BBQ restaurant.
It didn't take long for the charcoal to arrive at the center of the table. Being the original rice husk smoked BBQ restaurant, the quality of the top-grade charcoal and rice husks was evident at a glance.
3. Rice Husk Pre-Cooking
The meat was taken to the pre-cooking area, where it was smoked over charcoal with added rice husks. Witnessing this original method firsthand was definitely a novel experience.
I watched as the meat turned golden-brown in the special area. It was impressive to see the smoke permeating the meat, infusing it with a unique aroma.
The pre-cooked meat was brought back to the table for the final grilling. I was grateful for the professional service of having an expert grill each piece.
The entire black pork spread was filling, conveying a sense of luxury. The composition of Seongsan's famous restaurant was so satisfying that it felt hearty just by looking at it.
The deliciously grilled black pork on the special grill began to glisten. The perfect level of grilling and color confirmed its top-notch quality.
4. Geumdot's Black Pork
I first tried it with just a pinch of salt. The flavor of the meat itself was truly alive, and the salty taste blended well, making it superb.
I also tried adding salted pollack roe (myeongranjeot). The addition of saltiness provided another unique flavor. The roe wasn't overly salty, complementing the savory meat perfectly.
Eating it with the special meljeot (anchovy sauce) was a surprisingly fantastic combination. The moist, savory, and umami flavor harmonized with the fatty meat, creating a rich taste.
I placed enoki mushrooms and kimchi on one side of the grill and cooked them in the pork fat. The mushrooms, in particular, were chewy and infused with the fatty flavor, making them a delightful savory treat.
They provided plenty of leafy greens from the start, making it easy to wrap the meat. A mouthful of the large pieces of meat and various side dishes boasted a rich taste and texture, leaving a lasting impression.
5. Black Pork Kimchi Stew
The Black Pork Kimchi Stew, served bubbling hot in an earthenware pot, was still simmering. The spicy aroma emanating from the rich broth stimulated my senses.
I was surprised to see a generous amount of ingredients inside the stew. I was touched by their generosity and care in using plenty of ingredients.
I ended up ordering a bowl of rice to mix into the stew. Each spoonful was flavorful, tangy, and refreshing, as if it were soothing my stomach.
6. Geumdot's Yeolmu Noodles
Finally, the refreshing Geumdot Yeolmu Noodles (young radish kimchi noodles) also arrived. It was the perfect, refreshing dessert after eating the oily meat.
I tried the cool noodles with the crunchy yeolmu. The kimchi had a unique, tangy, and clean taste as if they made them directly. It felt like digestion was working smoothly making it perfect till the end.
I was able to truly taste the authentic flavor of black pork through the original rice husk smoking method.
It's difficult to find such a unique and delicious restaurant. I highly recommend visiting Geumdot to experience it for yourself!
