G-Dragon Makes History as First K-Pop Idol to Receive Order of Cultural Merit

A historic moment for K-Pop as G-Dragon becomes the first K-Pop idol to be awarded the Order of Cultural Merit, one of the highest government honors in the field of Korean popular culture and arts.
He also sets a record as the youngest recipient of this prestigious award.
The 16th Korea Popular Culture and Arts Awards ceremony was held at the Haeoreum Theater of the National Theater of Korea, celebrating the achievements of individuals in various fields, including singers, actors, comedians, writers, and producers.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism comprehensively evaluated the nominees based on their years of service, activities, and social reputation, ultimately selecting 31 individuals and groups. G-Dragon's presence alone highlights the significance of this award.
"A commendation in my 20s, an order in my 30s… I'm looking forward to my 40s," G-Dragon quipped during his acceptance speech.
He expressed his pride in being a singer and his love for his work, revealing his continued passion and self-esteem. He reminisced about his long journey, starting with an audition he attended with his mother at the age of six, creating a touching atmosphere.
His unwavering belief in his dreams resonated with many fans.
The Order of Cultural Merit is the second-highest honor in the field of culture and arts. It is awarded only when national influence and social contribution are recognized, going beyond mere popularity.
G-Dragon has played a significant role in leading trends in music, fashion, and performing arts, contributing to the global spread of the Korean Wave (Hallyu).
His statement, "I want to be remembered as an artist who established a style as a specific figure, regardless of era or generation," reflects his pride in building his identity.
He also added, "The seniors who made me dream were shining stars every night. I think I've become one of those stars now," delivering a warm message to younger artists.
G-Dragon shared that next year marks BIGBANG's 20th anniversary and expressed his desire to share this honor with his members.
BIGBANG is recognized for changing the direction of K-Pop boy group culture. With their hip-hop-based music, producing skills, and unique fashion sense, they are often credited with creating the current standards for K-Pop idols. His wish to share this achievement with his members highlights their strong teamwork.
He emphasized the power of music, stating that it can be felt even without understanding the language, explaining his reasons for performing on the global stage.
Currently, G-Dragon is serving as an ambassador for the 2025 Gyeongju APEC Summit and is successfully continuing his world tour, 'Übermensch,' across Asia, the Americas, and Europe.
His performances in major cities around the world, including Newark, Las Vegas, and Paris, have been sold out. His borderless influence and constantly evolving stage presence prove why he is a representative artist of K-Pop.
He concluded with the inspiring message, "Good dreams will come true someday. I hope you all have good dreams today."
