Sometimes, the best travel experiences come from embracing an unpredictable path. This spontaneous journey through Bonghwa and Andong was a soul-soothing retreat, offering a chance to reconnect with oneself amidst the profound beauty of nature. From the majestic tigers of the Baekdudaegan mountain range to the serene traditional houses of Andong, every moment was a gift of genuine rest.
In this guide, we explore the hidden gems of Gyeongsangbuk-do, where the air is fresh and time seems to slow down. Whether you are seeking a quiet walk through a world-class arboretum, a thrilling stroll across a suspension bridge, or a meditative tea session at a romantic temple, this itinerary provides a roadmap to deep comfort and unexpected beauty.
Encounters with Nature: National Baekdudaegan Arboretum (국립백두대간수목원)
Our spontaneous trip began at the National Baekdudaegan Arboretum (국립백두대간수목원) in Bonghwa. This massive sanctuary is a tribute to the ecological richness of the Korean peninsula. We took the Tiger Tram up the lush forest paths, which is highly recommended to save your energy for the scenic walk back down. The gentle slope makes the return journey a refreshing breeze under the cool forest canopy.
Visiting the Majestic Tiger Forest
The highlight of the arboretum is undoubtedly the Tiger Forest. Although the tigers were enjoying a quiet nap during our visit, their majestic presence was still deeply palpable. Operating hours vary between summer and winter seasons, and it's worth noting the facility is closed every Monday. Don't forget to stop by the Visitor Center on the 2nd floor for more information before starting your tour.
Bonghwa's Verdon Gorge: Seonyugyo Bridge
After immersing ourselves in the arboretum, we headed to Seonyugyo Bridge. Often called 'Bonghwa's Verdon Gorge', this spot offers a view that looks like a classical painting brought to life. The bridge spans across a stunning riverside landscape where the blue water of the Nakdong River harmonizes with the surrounding cliffs.
A Thrilling Riverside Stroll
Walking across this suspension bridge provides a subtle thrill while allowing you to take in the breathtaking scenery. We saw many people cycling along the Nakdong River paths below, highlighting the area as a favorite for outdoor enthusiasts. Located in Myeongho-myeon, it’s a must-stop for anyone who wants to capture the essence of Bonghwa's natural beauty in a single frame.
Healing at Traditional Sites: Nongam Jongtaek (농암종택)
Continuing our journey into nearby Andong, we visited Nongam Jongtaek (농암종택). This historic head house sits in front of a gently flowing river, offering a sense of peace that is hard to find in the city. Exploring the spacious grounds of this traditional Korean house (Hanok) felt like a meditative experience, made even more delightful by a friendly cat that followed us around.
Spiritual Peace at Imgangsa Temple
Just a short walk from the head house is Imgangsa Temple. Despite being established relatively recently, the temple exudes a romantic and tranquil aura. The tea-drinking area is a particular treasure, where the head monk cultivates his own flowers and serves delicious local dried persimmons. Watching the crimson sunset envelop the temple was the ultimate healing moment of our trip.
