The History of Goyang and the Artistic Space 'Saedeul'

Goyang's rich history and the perspective of young artists converge at the artistic space 'Saedeul' with the exhibition The Growth Rings of Sinpyeong.
Join us for the 2026 Gyeonggi Roofless Museum from July 10 to November 30, 2026.
Located in the northern part of Gyeonggi Province, near the Han River estuary, we invite you to explore the old tales of Goyang through the eyes of young artists.
The exhibition reconstructs the layers of time that the Sinpyeong-dong village in Goyang has experienced through visual arts.
This event will take place in 'Saedeul', an artistic space that has transformed from an old military barracks.
Exhibition Details:
- Date: July 10 - November 30, 2026
- Location: Goyang City Artistic Space 'Saedeul'
- Visiting Hours: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM (Open on weekdays only; closed on weekends and holidays)
- Participating Artists: Kim Yong-hyun, Seo Seong-hyeob, Jeon Ji-hong, Han Seok-gyeong
As you travel along the freeway towards Goyang, the name 'Sinpyeong' will greet you, signaling your arrival home.
Sinpyeong serves as a boundary between Seoul and Goyang, and between Gimpo and Goyang, representing a transition into a familiar space.
Sinpyeong-dong is located at the entrance of Goyang, adjacent to the Han River estuary, and has been shaped by the development of the Ilsan new city and the construction of the freeway.
However, it is a village that had to pause amidst the rapid pace of change.
The growth rings of Sinpyeong reflect the loss of 'living space' as the village made way for new roads.
Through contemporary perspectives, we will delicately revisit the village's hardened memories.
Saedeul, as an artistic space, has been transformed from the old military barracks, which were vacated when the barbed wire along the freeway was removed.
It now serves as a creative space for young artists, featuring an open studio event where visitors can peek into the artists' workspace.
The exhibition The Growth Rings of Sinpyeong connects the history, environment, and lifestyle of Gyeonggi Province, aiming to preserve and utilize local resources.
We encourage everyone to visit before the exhibition concludes on November 30.
Thank you for your interest!
