Sunrise Solitude on Inwangsan Mountain

Sometimes the most profound journeys are the ones that happen when our original plans fall through. After a late-night gathering with friends forced me to cancel a long trip to Hambaeksan, I found solace right in my own backyard at Inwangsan Mountain (인왕산). This pre-dawn hike through Gaemi Village and up to Gicha Rock became a deeply personal quest for clarity and emotional release.
In this post, I share the experience of a solitary night hike and the breathtaking reward of a perfect sunrise. From the shimmering city lights of Hongeun-dong to the clear visibility of Namsan and Lotte Tower, this morning was a reminder that even in our darkest moments, the sun eventually rises to reveal a world full of hope and staggering beauty.
A Solitary Night Hike Through Gaemi Village
Finding courage in the darkness of Seoul's shantytown
Leaving home at 3 AM, I was greeted by the surprisingly cool air of early autumn. Since the main apartment gate was locked, I detoured through Gaemi Village, a historic shantytown on the slopes of Inwangsan. The climb here is often more difficult than the mountain trail itself, but the morning dew glistening like stars in my flashlight beam provided a quiet guide for the path ahead.
Hiking alone at night can be a spine-chilling experience, filled with moments of hesitation and deep reflection. As I looked down at the unblinking city lights, I couldn't help but wonder about the complex lives of the people below. It is in these quiet, shadowy moments on the mountain that I often find the strength to process my own wounds and find the resolve to keep moving upward.
Gazing at Bukhansan Ridge from Gicha Rock
Memorizing peaks to quiet a restless mind
Reaching Gicha Rock offered a moment of mental stillness. Gazing at the Bibong Ridge of Bukhansan, I found comfort in naming the peaks from left to right: Jokduri, Hyangnobong, Bibong, and beyond. Mountains have always been my sanctuary—places where I can laugh with friends or shed secret tears in solitude. Over the past year and seven months, they have become essential for my emotional survival.
As the warm, reddish light began to envelop the eastern sky beyond Bukaksan Mountain, the complex thoughts of the night started to fade. The contrast between the setting moon in the west and the rising sun in the east served as a beautiful reminder of the world's many faces. It was a perfect morning with exceptional visibility, allowing even the distant Lotte Tower to stand out clearly against the horizon.
The Perfect Sunrise: A Personal Reward
Overcoming pain under the red morning sun
The sun eventually revealed itself in full glory, casting a warm glow over the newly opened views of the Blue House area. Standing at the summit of Inwangsan Mountain (인왕산), I let out all the subtle emotions I had been carrying. Tears came freely, wiped away only when other hikers passed by. This ritual of sweat and tears on the mountain is how I slowly overcome my pain and find the will to face a new day.
Watching the sunlight touch the Han River and the western horizon, I felt a sense of peace with my failed plans. While Hambaeksan would have been grand, this intimate experience with my "neighborhood mountain" was exactly what my heart needed. As the dreadful summer heat finally begins to retreat, I am reminded that I have survived another difficult season of life.
Have you ever found healing in a sunrise after a difficult night? Do you have a favorite mountain spot where you go to find mental clarity or release your emotions? If you're looking for a peaceful place to witness the changing seasons in Seoul, I highly recommend an early morning visit to Inwangsan. Would you like me to recommend some other great sunset and sunrise spots near Jongno?
