Escape the unpredictable summer weather and step into a world of light and sound at Theatre des Lumieres (빛의 시어터). Located within the Walkerhill Hotel, this venue has transformed the historic Walkerhill Grand Theater into a massive media art space spanning 1,500 pyeong with a 21m high ceiling. It offers an overwhelming sensory experience where you become the protagonist within a living canvas.
Using high-definition projectors and 3D sound technology, the exhibition hall provides an inclusive environment for everyone to enjoy. With barrier-free access, elevators, and plenty of places to sit and "stare at the light," it is the perfect unique summer vacation spot to hide away from the heat or rain while soaking in high-level visual art.
Current Immersive Exhibitions
Egypt of the Pharaohs & Lee Ungno Special
The current headline show, <Egypt of the Pharaohs, Ancient Civilization Awakened by Light>, takes you on a time-travel journey to the era of pyramids and gods. This 36-minute sensuous recreation illuminates the lives of ancient artisans and the glory of the pharaohs through magnificent visual expressions.
In addition, you can catch <Lee Ungno: A Great Artistic Journey, Seoul-Paris>, a special 14-minute exhibition commemorating the 120th anniversary of the birth of this modern Korean master. Both exhibitions have been extended until October 31, 2025, due to their popularity, allowing more visitors to witness the fusion of Korean soul and European modernism.
Enhance Your Experience: Guides and Docents
Audio Commentaries and Expert Insights
To deepen your understanding, try the Audio Guide featuring profound commentary recorded by the K-pop group Highlight. For a more scholarly dive, special docent tours led by renowned Egyptian archaeologist Kwak Min-soo are available on select dates (check the website for August schedules). These sessions are highly recommended for children on summer break and history enthusiasts.
For parents, there are also dedicated audio guides for children, designed to explain Egyptian history in a fun and accessible way. These are available on a first-come, first-served basis, ensuring a meaningful and educational day for younger visitors.
Universal Tourism and Facilities
Theatre des Lumieres is committed to accessibility. The main entrance features braille blocks and zero steps, and a revolving door designed for easy entry. Inside, the space is mostly flat with elevators connecting different levels, making it fully accessible for wheelchairs and strollers. Accessible restrooms are located within the exhibition hall for convenience.
While the interior is intentionally dark for the best visual experience, the floor is level and safe for cautious walking. Reclining areas and chairs are scattered throughout, inviting you to stay for multiple sessions—admission and exit are possible at any time during operating hours.
Which exhibition are you more excited about: the mysterious civilization of ancient Egypt or the artistic journey of Lee Ungno? If you're coming with family, would you like me to find the specific shuttle bus schedule from Gwangnaru or Gangbyeon Station?
