Dorak Mountain: A Spicy Trekking Adventure on the Naegunggi Trail

Why do we even hike??
That question sparked this hiking diary of a grumpy hiker.
This is the 73rd hike ⛰️, and this time, it's trekking!
(Top 100 Korean Mountains 32/100, Top 100+ 8/114, Baekdu-daegan Trail 7/100)
Today's Mountain
Dorak Mountain (道樂山), named by the scholar Song Si-yeol with the meaning, "There must be a way to attain enlightenment, and there should also be joy in it."
This is the shortest route to Dorak Mountain, the Naegunggi Trail.
Here's the course I did: Chiaksan National Park Guryongsa Course (Ladder Ridge Path)
Parking: 192 Beolcheonri-gil, Danseong-myeon, Danyang-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do (Parking is limited)
Course: Parking Lot - Naegunggi - Naegunggi Intersection - Summit - Return to Starting Point
Distance: Approximately 3.2km
Elevation Gain: 496m
Time: 3 hours based on my pace (including rest time)
Difficulty: Subjective - Moderate to Easy
One-line Review: A short but spicy and fun hike!
Starting from Naegunggi, passing through the Naegunggi Intersection,
and returning to the starting point after reaching the Dorak Mountain summit.
You can park here.
There is a small parking area at the entrance of the lodging.
Be careful as the road to get here is narrow.
Active hiking time was 2 hours, total 3 hours including rest.
Short distance, but a crazy combination of continuous rocky ridges, slopes, and stairs.
It's a relief that the Naegunggi course is short.
There's a reason why Dorak Mountain feels like you're going crazy!
Following the narrow road to Harutbamgunggwolteo (One-Night Palace Site),
there is a parking area right in front of the entrance.
It seems to fit about 7 cars.
After walking up about 100 meters, you will come to a fork in the road.
Follow the sign and go up to the left.
Go up to the right where you see the barrier.
For about 400m, you will gently ascend along the forest path.
From the point where you see this sign, the climb becomes steep.
Rocky ridges slowly appear. Hold on to the handrails well.
Looking back while climbing,
you can see the magnificent mountain ridges. The scenery is great.

...Did I only walk 100m??
Stairs are slowly appearing.
There are also relentlessly steep sections.
Climbing over rocky ridges, slopes, and stairs,
you will arrive at the 1km mark.
It's short, but spicy.
But thanks to that, it's fun.
You have to climb up to the peak in the middle.
You have to climb these stairs.

If you see these stairs, it's stairs all the way to the Naegunggi Intersection from here.
The scenery is really magnificent when you turn around while climbing the stairs.
When you finish climbing the stairs, you will arrive at the Naegunggi Intersection.
There is no sign here, so find the path carefully.
Proceed to the right.

If you see this deck bridge, you're on the right path.
If you proceed along a slight uphill path from here,
you will arrive at the 964m Dorak Mountain summit.
It was Liberation Day a day late, so I unfolded the Korean flag.
I rested for a while and then descended.

Here is that deck bridge.
I took pictures of the magnificent scenery from the stairs going down again.
The path is definitely a bit more challenging when going down,
so I quietly put my camera in my bag and came down.
The climb was spicy, and the descent was dizzying,
so come down slowly, one step at a time.

Dorak Mountain definitely seems like a fun mountain.
If I have the chance next time, I should try the
Jebong and Chaeunbong courses starting from the Sangseonam parking lot.
