A Cozy Experience at Wolhadong: A Taste of Clear Pork Bone Soup

After seeing a black-and-white chef, I felt an urge to try some pork bone soup in New York. With the recent cold weather, I was craving something warm, so I decided to visit a newly opened clear pork bone soup restaurant in Insadong.
The place is called "Wolhadong." It’s located on Insadong 8-gil, in a traditional Hanok building.
Wolhadong focuses on offering meals that are 'light enough to eat every day' and 'trustworthy choices' rather than flashy presentations or overly stimulating flavors.
Getting there is easy; it’s situated between Anguk Station and Jongno 3-ga Station, about a 10-minute walk. As you walk through the alleys near Ssamziegil, you'll find a small path leading to the entrance of Wolhadong.
Upon entering, you’ll be surprised by the spacious interior, which retains traditional Hanok elements while being modernized. The decor is tidy and aesthetically pleasing, making it suitable for dining with parents or important guests.
The atmosphere is calm, perfect for conversation or enjoying your meal at a leisurely pace. The entrance features a fermentation room for kimchi, showcasing the transparency of their ingredients.
Wolhadong has a special area for solo diners, making it a comfortable spot for those dining alone. You can enjoy a meal without feeling awkward, even during lunchtime.
The signature dish is the Wolhadong Gomtang, priced at 12,000 KRW. They also offer cold boiled pork for 10,000 KRW and extra meat for 6,000 KRW.
The Wolhadong Gomtang is characterized by its clear and clean broth. Unlike the typical thick and milky gomtang, this version boasts a deep yet refreshing flavor. The broth is simmered for a long time, resulting in a taste that is both clean and umami-rich.
One of the greatest advantages is how light it feels after eating. It’s not greasy, making it suitable for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. It’s also an excellent hangover remedy, as it’s flavorful but not overwhelming, appealing to all ages.
The soup includes a bowl of rice topped with thinly sliced pork, which is tender and lean. The combination of the broth, pork, and rice is delightful.
The kimchi here is exceptional, made with locally sourced napa cabbage, radish, and chili powder. They have a dedicated fermentation room to regularly check the quality of their kimchi and side dishes.
Every side dish is well-prepared and delicious, complementing the gomtang and cold boiled pork perfectly. You can request refills without hesitation.
Halfway through my meal, I added chili oil as suggested, creating a new flavor profile that was slightly spicy and utterly satisfying.
In summary, if you want to enjoy delicious food in a Hanok atmosphere without breaking the bank, I highly recommend Wolhadong. You’ll experience deep flavors that are not overwhelming, and enjoy a clean yet satisfying meal.
