Jeju Island is beautiful year-round, but it truly shines in the fall and winter. If you enjoy immersing yourself in nature, like I do, you'll love exploring the island's oreums (volcanic cones) and forests. Here are five fantastic destinations to experience the refreshing autumn and winter atmosphere of Jeju.
1. San굼부리 Crater
San굼부리 is a stunning crater, a must-see in the fall. This oreum boasts one of the most magnificent and largest volcanic craters in Jeju. It's a popular filming location for dramas and movies and a favorite destination for international tourists.
Location: 768, Bijarim-ro, Jocheon-eup, Jeju-si
Parking: Ample parking available
Admission: 7,000 KRW
Hours: 9:00 AM - 5:40 PM
While beautiful in all seasons, San굼부리 is especially enchanting in the fall when silver reeds blanket the entire oreum. The well-maintained walking trails and guided tours make it even more enjoyable. Note that the admission fee is relatively high.
Don't miss the chance to take memorable photos with the crater as your backdrop from the observation deck at the summit. Guided tours are available four times a day, offering insights into the history and origins of San굼부리. These tours are free of charge.
2. Yongnuni Oreum Hike
A walk on Yongnuni Oreum is another excellent choice for experiencing Jeju in the fall. Compared to the other 360 oreums on Jeju Island, Yongnuni is as famous as Saebyeol Oreum.
The charm of Yongnuni Oreum lies in its gentle slopes, perfect for strolling amidst the beautifully blooming reeds and admiring the ridgelines. It takes only about 15 minutes to reach the summit, but the trail itself is more impressive than the peak. It's a great place to soak in the subtle autumn colors.
From the summit, you can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding oreums and even see Hallasan Mountain in the background. Be sure to turn around and capture the scenery.
If your visit coincides with the 5th or 10th of the month, consider visiting the nearby Sehwa Five-Day Market. You can sample local food and experience the lively atmosphere of a traditional Korean market.
3. Hamdeok Beach: A Beautiful Seaside Escape
Even with the chilly winds, a trip to Jeju's beaches is a must. Hamdeok Beach offers sparkling waters, a palm tree-lined promenade, and a spacious lawn—all in one place.
Hamdeok Beach is known as one of the most beautiful beaches in Korea. The jewel-like waters have a calming effect, washing away worries and clearing your mind. The ample parking makes it a stress-free destination.
The area is also home to ocean-view cafes and restaurants, making it ideal for a day trip. A small flea market often takes place along the main road, offering souvenirs, snacks, and other travel essentials.
4. Dakmeoru Coastal Trail
Just a 10-minute drive from Hamdeok Beach is the Dakmeoru Coastal Road, a scenic coastal walk. The area is named Dakmeoru (닭머르) because the surrounding terrain resembles a hen embracing its eggs.
This spot is particularly popular for its romantic sunsets. Rather than offering grand attractions, it's a place to enjoy a leisurely stroll, feel the autumn breeze, and admire the reeds. Visit with a relaxed attitude.
5. Jeolmul Natural Recreation Forest: A Family-Friendly Retreat
Jeolmul Natural Recreation Forest is a fantastic destination for families. It's a place where both adults and children can enjoy the natural beauty of Jeju Island.
Walk along trails lined with towering cedar trees, discover hidden photo spots, and let the kids run and play on the playground and grassy fields. It's a simple yet fulfilling way to experience Jeju's nature.
I've shared some of my favorite places to visit in Jeju, including areas in Jocheon and Gujwa. Be sure to dress warmly, as the weather in Jeju can be quite chilly these days.
