The Solitary Zelkova Tree of Ugak-myeon: A Hidden Gem with a Word of Caution

Just as Seoul's Olympic Park boasts a 'Solitary Tree,' Ugak-myeon in Dangjin City is home to its own 'Zelkova Tree.' Affectionately known as Dangjin's Solitary Tree, this Zelkova is a hidden gem and a popular photo spot.
The address is 68-2 Daepo-ri, Ugak-myeon. Note that there is no designated parking area, so you'll need to park briefly on the surrounding roads, being mindful not to disrupt local farmers.
Before I delve further, I must share the latest information and some important considerations regarding the Zelkova Tree. Many people have captured stunning photos with the tree as a backdrop, likely until this past summer and early autumn.
During my visit in November, as I approached the tree to take photos, a person who appeared to be the landowner was setting up 'No Entry' signs and restricting access.
It seems the landowner has experienced some issues with visitors coming to photograph or sightsee around the Zelkova Tree. The path leading to the tree and the surrounding area wouldn't typically cause significant disruption or harm if approached respectfully.
Whether it was the owner or a local resident, they seemed quite displeased. Therefore, if you visit the Zelkova Tree, it's advisable to photograph it from a distance rather than approaching it directly.
Despite this limitation, the surrounding scenery and village ambiance are beautiful. Even after the harvest, the golden fields evoke a sense of abundance, and the sky-blue grain warehouses and buildings create a striking contrast against the earthy tones, offering a picturesque view.
Sometimes, instead of solely focusing on famous landmarks, or even when you do visit such a landmark, it's worth expanding your perspective. You can discover excellent compositions, colors, and subjects to capture stunning landscapes or snapshots.
The nearby Soban-ri and Naegyeong-ri offer horizon-like views, which provided some consolation despite the inability to photograph the Zelkova Tree up close.
Visiting just before the harvest would have been ideal. It seems I missed the golden opportunity on my first visit to the Zelkova Tree.
Ironically, a search for 'Ugak-myeon Zelkova Tree' on portal sites reveals detailed information along with a cautionary note: 'As it is private property in the middle of a rice paddy, please be careful not to cause damage to nearby houses or crops!' This is the AI's response.
Keep this in mind when visiting, and try to photograph it from a distance!
If I had brought a telephoto lens, I could have captured more dramatic photos despite the circumstances. However, due to the private property issue and the owner's request to refrain from entering, I wanted to share this information to assist future visitors.
What remains clear is that this is a representative photo spot and attraction in Dangjin City. Please respect travel etiquette to avoid causing harm to others and to prevent over-tourism.
