Sapgyo Lake Floodgate and Park
On a day when autumn was deepening, I visited Sapgyo Lake in Sinpyeong-myeon, Dangjin-si, and looked around the Sapgyo Lake Floodgate and the surrounding parks. This area is managed by the Sapgyo Lake Management Office of the Korea Rural Community Corporation Dangjin Branch, and the office is located on the right side of the entrance.
So, what is a floodgate? A floodgate is a gate installed to discharge internal water, blocked from the sea by a seawall in freshwater lakes or reclaimed land, into the sea.
There is a road over the floodgate, allowing you to cross Sapgyo Lake and move north. Parks are 조성 nearby where you can take a break. You can rest for a while at the entrance of the floodgate and in the parks around the floodgate.
The Sapgyo Lake Floodgate was completed in 1979. Former President Park Chung-hee's last official event was scheduled to be his attendance at the completion ceremony of the Sapgyocheon Seawall, but due to the assassination by Kim Jae-gyu, the head of the Central Intelligence Agency, that day became a painful page in history.
After the completion of this floodgate, the existing floodgate was expanded due to its aging and insufficient flood control function. The expansion prevents flood damage due to climate change and has the effect of preventing loss of life and property.
The expansion project was completed in 2021, with 5 floodgates with a width of 24m and a height of 30m, and a fishway and communication line with a width of 7m and a length of 30m were installed. An integrated flood forecasting and warning system was established, allowing a maximum of 6,890㎥ of water to be discharged per second.
As the length of the floodgate increased to 240m, it helps to prevent flood damage in the vicinity. As you drive inside, you can see the magnificent appearance of the floodgate and learn about its function and purpose.
As you go inside, there is a roundabout, and a park has 조성 to the left. There is a sculpture at the bottom of the floodgate with the title 'Dream,' which contains the explanation: 'Imagining flying over the rough sea as if dreaming, I hope it will be a space full of excitement and freedom.'
A park has 조성 here, and the view of the sea you meet here is also very beautiful. You can see the Sapgyo Lake tourist site, including the Sapgyo Lake Battleship Park with a warship. And you can also see the Ferris wheel of the Sapgyo Lake amusement park in the distance.
You can see a dandelion flower in the park. Although it is deep autumn, the sight of it blooming with strong vitality is beautiful. You can occasionally see flowers around, and the park scenery you meet while sitting on a chair is also good to see.
There is also a sculpture in this park, and there is a shelter where you can overlook the Sapgyo Lake area. You can see the distant Seohae Bridge and feel the relaxation of the boats floating on the sea.
If you come back to the Sapgyo Lake tourist site from here, there is a parking lot and a park 조성 nearby. In the middle of the park stands the Sapgyocheon Basin Agricultural Development Memorial Tower. The completion of this place has been of great help to local farmers.
Coming out to this park, there is a tree with beautiful autumn foliage, so it is very good to feel the atmosphere of deepening autumn. Looking at the yellow or red leaves, you can see the depth of autumn as it is.
It is great for taking a walk slowly here. Looking at the boats floating or docked in the surrounding sea, it is a beautiful sight like a picture in nature.
There is an apple-shaped sculpture on one side, which functions as a chair, so you can sit and rest here for a while, and you can also see people taking pictures. It blends well with the beautiful autumn foliage around it.
Right next to it is a fish market, where you can buy and eat various seafood. You can take out sliced raw fish, and there are various seafood items such as dried seafood, clams, sea cucumbers, and sea squirts, making it a space to enjoy.
There is a wooden deck towards the sea, so you can enjoy the surrounding scenery while walking, and you can see the floodgate well from here. Last time, I was able to see the water being drained, but I couldn't see it this time, but the sight of it blending with the surroundings is also good.
You can take a walk along the deck for a while and see the scenery of this Sapgyo Lake tourist site. It's nice to take a leisurely stroll, see the autumn foliage of the surrounding trees, and feel the relaxed time.
If you visit Sapgyo Lake Tourist Site, it is also very good to park your car in the parking lot at the entrance, walk along the road above the Sapgyo Lake Floodgate, spend time in the park inside, and then come out again and walk around the park around the parking lot to feel the autumn atmosphere.
After looking around here, it is also good to visit the Sapgyo Lake Marine Theme Experience Center, Sapgyo Lake Amusement Park, and Marine Park together, and then spend time eating grilled clams or sliced raw fish here.
