The Power of Community Participation: A Reflection on the Residents' Assembly
When people hear the term 'Residents' Assembly,' they often think of a formal event held in a meeting room. I used to view it merely as an administrative procedure.
However, attending the 2026 Dangjin 2-dong Residents' Assembly changed my perspective entirely. The assembly was not just a place to hear reports; it was a vibrant demonstration of living democracy where residents actively contemplated the future of their community and collectively determined its direction.
This assembly served as a platform to share the activities of the residents' council and discuss various upcoming projects and agendas with the community. Upon entering the venue, I was immediately struck by the bright and lively atmosphere. The space was prepared for residents to participate comfortably, and the sight of people greeting each other naturally conveyed the message of 'building our village together.'

Seeing them confidently present on stage made me exclaim, 'That's truly impressive.' Their ability to communicate their thoughts without nervousness in front of adults earned them significant applause from the audience. Most importantly, I was reminded that these young individuals are not just the future of the community; they are already active citizens shaping the present. This assembly demonstrated that local issues are not solely the concern of adults but can also be addressed by youth participation.
Listening to the children's presentations, I pondered whether we should not just pass our community onto the next generation but teach them how to create it together. It was encouraging to see society evolving from an era where adults made all the decisions to one where the voices of youth are respected.
