The Jincheon Arts Center has finally been completed. Located opposite the Jincheon Complex Community Center and the Urban Regeneration Center, it has started hosting performances to invigorate the local culture, beginning with the musical 'Bojae Lee Sang-seol' at the end of June. Last weekend, I attended a free performance of the play 'Sookhee's Bookstore.' It was my first play in 20 years, and I was filled with excitement. Here’s my review of the experience.

While visiting the Jincheon Complex Community Center, I decided to check out the newly opened Jincheon Arts Center. The center features an underground parking lot, the Jin Art Hall on the first floor, offices and rehearsal rooms on the second floor, and the Mir Hall and an outdoor stage on the third floor. There was a waiting area on the first floor before the performance started.

In the lobby, I noticed a poster with performance information, and I saw that there were two plays scheduled for July. I quickly accessed the QR code to book tickets for the upcoming 'Sookhee's Bookstore' performance.

Reservations for the play can be made through Naver Booking. I scanned the QR code on the poster and completed my reservation. Since 'Sookhee's Bookstore' was free, I simply checked in the number of attendees, and that was it!

On the day of the performance, heavy rain warnings were issued nationwide. I debated whether to brave the rain to attend the show, but fortunately, the rain subsided, and I arrived safely at the venue. The Jincheon Arts Center has an underground parking lot, making it convenient to attend performances even on rainy days. It seemed to be a trial period, as parking was free of charge.

At the information desk on the first floor, I provided my name for the reservation and was allowed to enter the theater. Instead of tickets, we received pamphlets for the play according to the number of attendees since it was a free event.

The play was held in the Jin Art Hall on the first floor, which was about the size of a movie theater and served as a mid-sized performance space. The seating arrangement allowed for clear sightlines from the front to the back, making it easy to enjoy the performance without obstruction. Despite the heavy rain earlier that morning, more than two-thirds of the seats were already filled when I arrived 15 minutes before the show. There were no assigned seats, so we could sit wherever there was an open spot.

I have attended a few small theater performances during my school years, and this was my first play in Jincheon in 20 years. I was excited to have the opportunity to watch performances regularly in my area. The air conditioning in the theater was quite strong, likely due to the hot weather. I brought a light jacket, so I was comfortable, but those who are sensitive to cold should consider bringing outerwear for the performance.

The play 'Sookhee's Bookstore' is set in a second-hand bookstore during the 1980s Gwangju and explores themes of family love and the May 18 Democratic Uprising. It provided an opportunity to reflect on how we are living comfortably today thanks to someone else's sacrifice. The play was filled with humor and fun, ensuring there was never a dull moment.

The performance lasted about 1 hour and 30 minutes. After it ended, I had a chance to take a closer look at the stage, which was quite moving, as if I had just watched a touching film.

In the elevator back to the parking lot, I noticed a poster for an opera performance by the National Opera Company called 'The Barber of Seville' scheduled for August. If you missed the play in July, make sure to check out the opera in August!
