The Aesthetics of Waves and Waiting

(December 1st to 7th)

510, Eupnae-dong, Seosan-si, Chungcheongnam-do

▲ Waves, Waiting

The Seosan Arts Center Exhibition Hall in Chungcheongnam-do will be filled with the emotions of waves and waiting from December 1st to 7th.

Song Hae-seok, an invited artist in the Korean Painting category of the Grand Art Exhibition of Korea, presents his solo exhibition, ‘Waiting, Filled with Emptiness,’ to the public.

▲ Wave (Waiting)_Wide

Waves, Waiting, and the Aesthetics of Emptiness

Song Hae-seok draws inspiration from the waves that crash against rocks and objects, leaving behind foam before disappearing.

The ceaseless surge and break of the waves, driven by the moon's gravity, symbolize ‘waiting’ and ‘unspoken emotions’ for him.

▲ Wave, Deeply Felt

The artist's notes contain the following sentence:

“Softness gathers to leave a strong impression, and the waves, repeating in different forms each moment, ultimately resemble life.”

The waves in his works are our hearts, a mixture of joy, regret, longing, and serenity, and the traces of emotions that do not easily fade with time.

‘Emptiness’ Drawn with the White of Hanji Paper

Another keyword of this exhibition is ‘emptiness.’

Song Hae-seok values the unique white color of Hanji paper and rarely uses white paint. Instead, he composes the screen by leaving the white parts of the Hanji untouched.

▲ Wave 25-1 (Memory)

The blank space left speaks more powerfully than the colored areas.

A landscape when viewed from afar, but a screen where you can feel the texture of emotions when you approach it.

▲ Wave Roar

The artist says this about the blank space:

“The blank space left on Hanji becomes a ‘speechless word’ and a ‘silent confession’ by being left empty.”

▲ Wave (Balloon Trip)

Viewers can step back to see the whole picture and then step closer to examine the details, experiencing a sense of presence as if the sound of waves is heard in their ears.

The charm of this exhibition is that it feels like a completely different work depending on the time of day and emotions.

Mid-Career Korean Painter Song Hae-seok, Speaking of Life Through Waves

Song Hae-seok is a Korean painter based in Seosan, Chungcheongnam-do. He graduated from the Department of Painting (Korean Painting) at Daegu Arts University and completed a master's degree in Art Education at the Graduate School of Education, Kyonggi University.

He was selected as an invited artist in the Korean Painting category of the Grand Art Exhibition of Korea and is a mid-career artist with various awards, including a Special Selection in the Korean Creative Culture & Art Awards (Oriental Painting) and acceptance into the Joongang Art Grand Prize.

▲ Wave Ⅲ (Waiting)

Recently, he has been working as a resident artist at the Seosan Cultural Foundation and has been steadily holding solo and group exhibitions at various art fairs and galleries in Korea.

His art world is characterized by a natural harmony of folk-painting-like materials, modern sensibility, and the beauty of blank space unique to Oriental painting.

Viewing Points

First, take a look from a distance, observing the overall atmosphere and flow of the waves, and appreciate the balance between the blank space and the colored parts of the screen.

Then, step closer and take a closer look at the subtle brushstrokes, blurs, and layers of accumulated emotions left on the paper, and you will see another landscape.

The feeling changes depending on the time of day; the temperature felt in the morning, afternoon, and evening is different even for the same work. As the artist said, you can have a special experience that comes across as “another new work depending on the passage of time.”

▲ Small Wave Memory

Song Hae-seok said about this exhibition, “I hope that the fleeting moments in everyday life will stay in your heart for a long time.”

Why not take a moment to stop and stand in front of the work, and recall the small waves that have passed by in your own life?

▲ Wave Ⅱ (Waiting)

Moments of emotion that surge and permeate like waves, come and experience the world of Song Hae-seok's works filled with waiting and emptiness at the Seosan Arts Center.

▲ Wave (Waiting-Rain)

▲ Wave Ⅶ (Wide Part 1)

▲ Sea of Clouds
