A Peak Shining Like Jade
Okbong Neighborhood Tour
Okbong-dong in Jinju is a neighborhood where history and culture are well preserved. Okbong and Sujeongbong, two peaks that shine like jade, are located in the center of the village. Let me introduce you to the history, culture, and shining aspects of everyday life that you will encounter as you walk slowly. Follow me on the Okbong Neighborhood Tour.
Bonghwang Bridge & Parking Lot
Today's Okbong Neighborhood Tour starts at Maltigogae Bonghwang Bridge. Bonghwang Bridge is a golden bridge that embodies a phoenix flying in the sky, and right below it is Bibong. There is a Seonhak Forest Park parking lot. Go down the bamboo path to the left at the end of the parking lot.
Okbong Neighborhood Scenery 1
If you come down a little, you can see Okbong-dong at a glance. The small houses and the plants in front of the houses feel warm.
Jinju Confucian School
The first course is Jinju Confucian School. It is a local educational institution during the Joseon Dynasty and a place to perform ancestral rites to ancient sages. It is a place where you can learn about the history of Jinju, an educational city. What was particularly impressive was the steep staircase that signified the separation of space.
Okbong Neighborhood Scenery 2
Walking through the Okbong neighborhood, you can see a simple appearance as if time has passed by. It is also a good place for an urban sketch tour.
Okbong Catholic Church
The second course is Okbong Catholic Church. It is a Catholic hub in the western Gyeongnam region and has value as a modern architectural heritage. The beautiful Romanesque bell tower is impressive. You can appreciate the beautiful harmony of autumn zelkova trees and the cathedral.
Okbong Senior Center
If you go up Saigogae Road at the Okbong three-way intersection, you will see Okbong Senior Center on your left. It is said to be Korea's first traditional Korean-style senior center and Jinju's first nursing home. It is a warm resting place for the neighborhood elders.
Jinju Sangmu Office
There are so many historical places in Jinju Okbong. Jinju Sangmu Office is said to be a place that protects the rights and manages the activities of peddlers, merchants who emerged with the development of markets in the late Joseon Dynasty. You can also see peddler murals on the wall behind the Jinju Sangmu Office.
Okbong Neighborhood Scenery 3
The Okbong neighborhood was fun to explore because there were so many alleys in between. Colorful houses and artifact murals are also frequently seen.
Okbong Ancient Tombs
Based on Saigogae, the left peak in the direction of Confucian School is Sujeongbong, and the right peak is Okbong. The Okbong Ancient Tombs are relics with traces of Gaya from the Three Kingdoms period. The closest course to climb here is to go up the stairs from 'Okbong-dong 560-3'. You can quickly reach the Okbong Ancient Tombs by passing through narrow roads and fields. You can also see a view of Jinju and the Nam River.
End of Okbong Neighborhood Tour
While touring Okbong, I looked at hidden places that encompass everything from ancient times to modern times. Walking through a neighborhood that embraces the history and culture of Jinju, I was able to encounter shining moments of everyday life, just like the name Okbong. Jinju Okbong-dong! I recommend taking a slow walk.
