Memorable Travel Destinations for Parents

One of the best gifts for parents is a trip together. Walking in the serene nature under the warm April sun provides greater comfort than any material gift. Especially with the entrance fees to major temples now waived, there is a wonderful opportunity to create special memories with your parents without worrying about travel expenses.
When planning a trip with your parents, accessibility and comfort are the most important factors. Instead of steep paths, we chose flat dirt roads, and instead of crowded entertainment spots, we opted for places where we could enjoy clean and delicious local cuisine. This weekend, I will introduce four of the latest travel destinations across the country that can offer your parents unforgettable experiences, along with useful tips.
"Transforming into a Cherry Blossom Tunnel in April"... Drive along the Cherry Blossom Road at Ssanggyesa Temple in Hadong
The Cherry Blossom Road in Hadong, Gyeongnam, is well-known among the parents' generation as a must-visit spot after marriage. Spanning about 4 kilometers, the cherry trees create a white flower tunnel that is breathtaking even just from the car. The Ssanggyesa Temple, located at the end of the Cherry Blossom Road, has made its entrance free of charge since May 2023, allowing for a stress-free visit.
The key to enjoying a trip to Hadong is to avoid the crowds. Arriving early in the morning or before 9 AM during the peak cherry blossom season allows for a leisurely experience. After exploring the temple, enjoying the local delicacy, clam soup, or fragrant green tea while catching up with your parents is also a great idea. Stopping by the nearby Hwacheon Market to check out local specialties adds to the joy of the trip.
"Free Admission and Parking Tips"... A Visit to Su-deoksa Temple in Yesan
Su-deoksa Temple in Yesan, Chungnam, is a great place to visit with parents who may have mobility issues. The path from the entrance to the main hall is gently sloped and well-maintained with wooden decks, making it easy to navigate with wheelchairs or strollers. Admission is also free, allowing you to fully appreciate the grandeur of the main hall, a national treasure.
There is a way to save on parking fees when visiting Su-deoksa. If you dine at the restaurant near the entrance, you can receive a parking voucher, so it's recommended to eat first and then take a stroll. Don't miss trying the local specialty, apple bread or apple juice, which are popular snacks among parents.
"Healing in the Scent of Fir Trees"... A Leisurely Walk on the Flat Forest Path at Naesosa Temple in Buan
Naesosa Temple in Buan, Jeonbuk, features a beautiful 600-meter path of fir trees leading from the entrance to the temple. This path is recognized by CNN as one of the beautiful roads in Korea, and the air filled with phytoncides makes you feel healthier just by walking. The flat dirt path is perfect for seniors to walk slowly while chatting, and admission is free.
Inside Naesosa, there is a 1,000-year-old zelkova tree, making it a great spot for a commemorative photo with your parents. For those who may have difficulty moving around, strollers and wheelchairs can be rented at the visitor center. You can also combine a half-day trip with nearby attractions like Chaeseokgang and Gyeokpo Port to enjoy both the sea and mountains.
"Literary Memories and a Bowl of Buckwheat"... Relaxation in Bongpyeong Buckwheat Flower Village in Pyeongchang
Bongpyeong in Pyeongchang, Gangwon-do, is known as the backdrop for the novel "When Buckwheat Flowers Bloom," evoking nostalgia for parents' generation. The Lee Hyo-seok Literary Museum has a low admission fee of 2,000 won for adults, while seniors over 65 can enter for free. The view of Bongpyeong from the museum is refreshing.
The highlight of the Bongpyeong trip is, of course, the buckwheat dishes. Buckwheat noodles, pancakes, and jelly are mild and satisfying for parents. Remember that the museum is closed on Mondays, so check the schedule before visiting. Located about a two-hour drive from Seoul, Bongpyeong is a healing spot where literature and taste harmonize.
During trips with parents, the time spent walking together while looking into each other's eyes holds more meaning than elaborate plans. I hope to see smiles on your parents' faces at these free admission attractions and flat walking paths. Before the warm April days pass, how about taking a light healing trip holding your parents' hands?
