A Century of Jinju Silk Landmark
The Only 'Jinju Silk Museum' in Korea Opens!
The Jinju Silk Museum finally opened on November 6th. It is the only silk-specialized museum in Korea, located in Jinju, the center of the Korean silk industry. This place gathers the history, technology, culture, and art of Jinju silk, which has been 이어져 for over 100 years, and will become a new landmark of Jinju. Let's start with the introduction of the Jinju Silk Museum and the review of the opening ceremony!
Soft Exterior Reminiscent of Silk
I arrived with plenty of time before the opening ceremony at 5 PM on November 6th. The first thing that catches the eye is the exterior of the Jinju Silk Museum. It consists of soft curves with almost no straight lines, like silk swaying in the wind. Also, I was able to appreciate the colorful silk walls with the ever-changing sunlight.
'Jinju Silk Road' Shining with Silk Lanterns
Beautiful silk lanterns are hung on the roadside trees outside the Jinju Silk Museum. This place is the 'Jinju Silk Road' honorary road. About 1,700 silk lanterns are installed here. It is being test-operated from 6 PM to 10 PM during November. It is expected to illuminate the subtle silk light as a new night view spot.
1st Floor Information Desk & Goods Shop & Stairwell
When you enter the Jinju Silk Museum on the 1st floor, there is an open information desk, and right next to it, there is a shop where you can buy museum goods. In particular, the beautiful silk hanging under the round window on the ceiling, which you can see just by climbing the stairs, is a point to appreciate.
1st Floor Experience Room
To the left of the information desk, colorful silks are hanging. This is the experience room. It is said to provide various experiences using silk and weaving.
Cozy Space 'Education Archive'
The last space on the 1st floor is the education archive. Various educational programs, including special lectures and courses, are scheduled to be held. When I went, they were preparing for a tea party.
2nd Floor Entrance to the Jinju Silk Exhibition Hall
This is the entrance to the 2nd floor JINJU SILK MUSEUM.
Panorama Exhibition Hall
In the hallway leading to the panorama exhibition hall, you can see an exhibition that combines costumes from different eras and videos. Unfortunately, I couldn't see the panorama exhibition hall because it was in the final stages of preparation when I went. It is said to be a space where you can enjoy the sense and flow of modern silk fashion with vivid media content.
Permanent Exhibition Hall 1
Permanent Exhibition Hall 1 is a place where you can view the history and industrialization process of the Jinju silk industry through various industrial artifacts. In particular, the large weaving machine for weaving silk was impressive.
Permanent Exhibition Hall 2
In Permanent Exhibition Hall 2, you can see the structure and beauty of the patterns of natural fiber silk. I stayed for a while admiring the beautiful colors of silk. There is also an experience corner where children can try weaving themselves.
Special Exhibition Hall
This is the special exhibition hall on the 2nd floor. As a 기념 of the opening, a special exhibition was being held under the theme of 'Silk, Life: Talking about Life'. It is an exhibition that sheds light on the symbolism and aesthetic value of silk, which has been with us at important moments in life such as weddings and funerals.
Rehearsal Before the Opening Ceremony
After looking around the exhibition hall like this, it was almost time for the opening ceremony. A fashion show rehearsal was in progress on the outdoor stage set up outside the museum. The opening ceremony was attended by the Mayor of Jinju, members of the National Assembly, city councilors, silk industry workers, artists, and many citizens.
Jinju Silk Museum Opening Ceremony
The Jinju Silk Museum opening ceremony had a hopeful atmosphere of inheriting the 100-year tradition of the silk industry and standing at the center of the future cultural and artistic industry. The highlight of the opening ceremony was the 'Silk Knot Untying Performance'. The symbolic message of the long silk tradition 이어져 into the future was impressive.
