Jeongamsa Temple: One of the Five Major Jeokmyeolbogung Temples

A Must-Visit Destination in Jeongseon

Easy Parking Available

Public parking lot available at the entrance.

Hello, I'm a travel influencer. Today, I'd like to introduce you to a place in Jeongseon, Gangwon-do, for those who want to clear their minds while breathing in the fresh air of October as autumn deepens. It's Jeongamsa Temple, one of Korea's five major Jeokmyeolbogung temples.

I visited in late September, and even the sight of the leaves slowly starting to change was beautiful. I imagine the autumn scenery is even more stunning now, making me want to go back.

If you want to enjoy the autumn scenery of a quiet mountain temple in Jeongseon, be sure to visit Jeongamsa Temple.

A thousand-year-old temple enshrining the Buddha's relics, a must-see in Jeongseon, Gangwon-do.

Jeongamsa Temple, founded by Great Master Jajang during the Silla Dynasty, is especially famous as one of the five major Jeokmyeolbogung temples enshrining the Buddha's relics.

Since Jeokmyeolbogung means 'a hall enshrining the Buddha's relics,' unlike typical temples, there are no Buddha statues inside the hall. Instead, it is said that the relics are enshrined in the Sumano Pagoda visible through the window behind the hall, which is truly special.

Entering Jeongamsa Temple

When you arrive at the entrance of Jeongamsa Temple, you will find a large parking lot, making it easy to park your car. The first thing you'll encounter after parking is the Iljumun Gate.

The Iljumun Gate is said to be the first gateway separating the secular world from the world of Buddha. Passing through the simple yet neat Iljumun Gate, I felt my complicated mind calm down.

Passing through the Iljumun Gate, a landscape unfolds before you, harmoniously blending Jeongseon's beautiful nature with the old temple buildings. When I went in late September, the autumn foliage was just beginning, but I think you can experience a much more wonderful autumn landscape now.

A Stroll Through Jeongamsa Temple in Full Autumn

As I entered the grounds, the cool sound of the valley stream and the fresh mountain air refreshed my whole body.

Jeongamsa Temple in late September was a scene where autumn foliage was slowly beginning, but now that it's October, I expect the beautifully colored maple trees to be surrounding the temple, which I'm looking forward to.

When you enter the Jeokmyeolbogung Hall, instead of a Buddha statue, there is a large window at the back. The structure is designed so that the Sumano Pagoda on the mountainside is visible at a glance through this window, which was really impressive.

After looking around the hall, I took a leisurely walk up to the Sumano Pagoda, fully enjoying the tranquil atmosphere of the temple.

In October, as autumn deepens, if you want to feel the tranquility of a quiet temple harmonizing with the autumn foliage, visit Jeongamsa Temple in Jeongseon, Gangwon-do.

Spending time breathing in the fresh air and walking to Sumano Pagoda made my mind feel comfortable.

And here, my friends and I each bought friendship rings. The rings are engraved with 'Om Mani Padme Hum,' a representative mantra of Buddhism, so I thought it would be meaningful to keep the good energy of Buddha with me in my daily life. I think it will be remembered as a precious trip that further strengthened my friendship with my friends.

If you are planning a trip to Jeongseon, Gangwon-do, why not take a break at Jeongamsa Temple, one of Korea's five major Jeokmyeolbogung temples?
