Goesan Mushroom Land Exhibition Hall
Grand Reopening
On August 1, the Goesan County Cheongcheon-myeon Mushroom Land Exhibition Hall reopened after renovations. The space now features a children's experience zone and augmented reality (AR) content, along with a book café and rest area. It is a great destination for families to enjoy Goesan's pristine nature and local specialties.
Cheongcheon-myeon in Goesan County is renowned for its wild mushrooms, thanks to the lush forests near Sobaeksan National Park and Hwayang Valley. Notable varieties include enoki, pine, and shiitake mushrooms, with processed products also available. Seasonal wild mushrooms can be found at the Cheongcheon Pure Stream Market.
Mushroom Land serves as a distribution hub for mushrooms in Goesan, featuring a distribution center, exhibition hall, and mushroom plaza. The annual Goesan Mushroom Festival is held every fall, with this year's event scheduled for October 9-10, themed "Let’s Play in the Autumn Forest, Following the Scent of Mushrooms."
The exhibition hall is located at 14 Hwayang-ro, Cheongcheon-myeon, Goesan, Chungcheongbuk-do, and operates from 9 AM to 6 PM, closed every Monday. Admission is free. The exhibition hall has been opened to the public since August 1, after renovations, allowing residents and visitors to explore its two floors: the first floor features a children's experience zone and rest area, while the second floor houses the mushroom exhibition.
Visitors are welcomed with AR content and can learn various fascinating stories about mushrooms. The exhibition recreates the forests where mushrooms thrive, showcasing mushroom fossils and historical texts from Korea and around the world.
Mushrooms are defined as fungi that grow as filamentous mycelium, absorb nutrients, and reproduce via spores. The term "mushroom" comes from the Korean word for small organisms that decay. They can be classified in various ways, with the most common categories being wild mushrooms, cultivated mushrooms, and inedible poisonous varieties.
Records of mushrooms in Korea date back to the Silla Kingdom during the reign of King Seongdeok in the 7th century. The hoof mushroom, which grows naturally across Korea, has been found as fossils dating back 145 million to 66 million years ago.
The exhibition includes sections on "I Am a Mushroom," North American mushrooms, rare mushrooms, and giant mushrooms, providing an immersive experience into the world of fungi. Visitors can also learn about the effects of medicinal mushrooms and tips for selecting quality mushrooms, distinguishing between wild varieties and cultivated ones.
The interactive experience of harvesting mushrooms in a forest setting allows guests to engage with both edible and poisonous types. A video presentation showcases the record of cultivating king oyster mushrooms over 15 days, explaining the cultivation methods for both cultivated and wild mushrooms, as well as their functional and nutritional values.
The stories of mushrooms span across time and cultures, illustrating their evolution in culinary and functional uses. A visit to the exhibition hall typically lasts around an hour, with various interactive zones enhancing the exploration.
The exhibition hall connects to a children's experience zone on the first floor, featuring a rest area and a book café, making it an ideal place for family outings. Children can enjoy reading books and engaging in coloring activities, making the experience enjoyable and educational.
The facility is comfortable and well-stocked with books across various genres. A highlight is the coloring activity where children can complete illustrations of animals, people, and mushrooms, which then come to life on a screen.
With the reopening of the Cheongcheon-myeon Mushroom Land Exhibition Hall on August 1, visitors can enjoy the outdoor mushroom plaza and nearby attractions like Hwayang Nine Scenic Spots and Gongrimsa Temple. In the beautiful natural surroundings, wild mushrooms thrive year-round. The mushrooms encountered at the exhibition can also be found at the Cheongcheon Pure Stream Market. If you are visiting nearby attractions this summer, don’t miss the newly renovated Mushroom Land Exhibition Hall.
