When your body and mind are tired, how do you spend your time?

Some prefer to relax quietly at home, while others seek rest through travel.

Participating in a temple stay is also a wonderful option.

A temple stay is a traditional cultural experience program where you can experience the daily life of practitioners at a mountain temple, allowing you to escape from your busy routine and find a true journey of happiness.

In Chungju, there is Seokjongsa Temple, which has been selected as the best temple for temple stays for three consecutive years from 2023 to 2025.

Now, let me introduce Seokjongsa Temple.

Seokjongsa, a thousand-year-old temple founded during the late Silla to early Goryeo period, is nestled under the majestic Bongbongsan Mountain, where it is said that a phoenix once lived amidst its lush bamboo groves.

The site of Seokjongsa is known as a rare auspicious location where the Southern and Northern Poles and the Samtaeyuksung can all be seen from the front of the main hall, surrounded by the protective embrace of the Ocheongryong.

However, the temple faced numerous challenges throughout history, leading to its closure. It was not until 1985 that Monk Hyeguk restored the temple, marking the beginning of its revival.

Seokjongsa features various spaces such as the main hall, Seonrimwon, Ohwagak, Anyangwon, Sosowon, Gamrogak, and Beomjonggak, which can be leisurely explored as you ascend the hill.

The Seonrimwon, visible from the parking lot, is where the temple stay programs are conducted. Its neat exterior reflects the serene atmosphere, and participants can engage in meditation, 108 prostrations, and tea ceremonies.

Seokjongsa is home to a five-story stone pagoda believed to have been built in the early Goryeo period, showcasing the craftsmanship of royal artisans.

The Beomjonggak houses a large bell, a big drum, a wooden fish, and a cloud board, with the bell's resonant sound symbolizing the Buddha's teachings, offering solace to suffering beings.

The temple's serene environment, including the clear waters of Gamrogak, rejuvenates travelers, making it an ideal spot for relaxation and healing.

As you wander through the temple grounds, you will discover beautiful scenery, including a quaint pond, vibrant maple trees, and a three-story stone pagoda that returned home after being taken to Japan for 80 years.

A temple stay at Seokjongsa promises to alleviate stress and bring tranquility, making it a perfect retreat for anyone seeking peace.

Whether or not you participate in a temple stay, Seokjongsa is highly recommended for those in need of rest and healing.
