Exploring Wolseong Valley and Yongamjeong

On July 15th, I visited Wolseong Valley in Gyeongnam, Geochang, a great spot for water activities and catching freshwater snails.
Wolseong Valley, located in Buk Sang-myeon, Geochang-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, is known for its clear waters and lush forests, making it a beloved summer getaway.
The valley's most appealing feature is the clean water flowing down from the slopes of Deogyusan Mountain, which is refreshing and crystal clear.
There are several paths leading down through Wolseong Valley, where safety personnel are present, and life jackets are available for free rental. This makes it a recommended spot for those looking for water activities in Gyeongnam.
Next to the famous cafe, Mindulleul, in Wolseong Valley, there is also a path leading down to the water, making it ideal for both swimming and catching freshwater snails.
Here, safety personnel and life jackets are available, ensuring thorough preparation against summer water accidents.
Please adhere to safety rules such as: ✔️ 40 minutes of swimming followed by a 20-minute break, ✔️ No diving or swimming after drinking, ✔️ Always wear a life jacket before swimming.
The valley next to Mindulleul Cafe is wide and shallow, making it suitable for children to enjoy water activities in Gyeongnam.
The left side of the valley has deeper water, while the right side is shallower.
There are also shaded areas where you can lay down a mat and take a break.
After exploring Wolseong Valley, I headed to Yongamjeong Valley.
Notably, there are clean restrooms and decks, making it a great place to relax while enjoying water activities with kids.
The term Yongam Palgyeong refers to the beautiful natural scenery around Yongamjeong, named by scholar Im Seok-hyeong during the late Joseon period, who described the eight stunning landscapes surrounding Yongamjeong.
Currently, the area around Geochang Yongamjeong is designated as a national scenic site.
Looking up from Yongamjeong, you can see the Susungdae suspension bridge.
Built in 1801 by Im Seok-hyeong (renovated in 1864), the pavilion boasts a magnificent view with a giant granite rock and clear water below.
The central area of Yongamjeong features a room where fire can be lit under the floor, showcasing the unique characteristics of mountain pavilions.
Life jackets are also provided at Yongamjeong, so please wear them while swimming.
As there are no safety personnel in the area around Geochang Yongamjeong, it is crucial to follow safety rules strictly.
As I descended below Yongamjeong, I found two decks where I could lay down and gaze at the sky.
I enjoyed lunch with kimbap I had prepared.
Since the area around Yongamjeong is designated as a national scenic site, cooking is prohibited, and only simple packed lunches are allowed.
There are also herons living in the valley in front of Yongamjeong, and I managed to capture some video footage.
The sound of the heron is said to resemble a scream, which is why it is sometimes called the 'screaming bird.'
Since there are areas with significant depth, make sure to swim inside the safety lines and always wear a life jacket.
While leisurely catching freshwater snails, I lost track of time due to the refreshing atmosphere.
For those looking for places to enjoy water activities and catch freshwater snails in Gyeongnam, I highly recommend Wolseong Valley and Yongamjeong.
