Autumn in Geosan arrives a bit early with the colorful rice fields.
By the end of July, the colors and shapes of the colorful rice fields become more distinct. This year, in celebration of the Year of the Red Horse, a vibrant red horse has appeared in the green fields. The yellow cosmos flowers are also in full bloom between the Moonlight Reservoir and the colorful rice fields. Embrace the early autumn by enjoying the scenic path around the Moonlight Reservoir.
The path to the colorful rice fields begins at the Moonlight Reservoir, where Salt Land is located. It is a delightful outing featuring three attractions: Salt Land, the Moonlight Reservoir, and the colorful rice fields. In the second week of August, a lush green wetland has formed in front of Salt Land, and the ginkgo tree path is equally rich in greenery. It showcases the peak of summer.
While autumn is the peak season for the beautiful fall foliage around the Moonlight Reservoir, summer also offers refreshing landscapes for the eyes and heart. On weekend afternoons, many families and friends enjoy walking along the ginkgo tree path. The green ginkgo leaves are gradually giving way to ripening ginkgo fruits.
The colorful rice fields can be found along the scenic path around the Moonlight Reservoir. It features a 2km walking trail that includes deck paths, embankment paths, and waterside paths. As you walk through the deck path and pass the sluice bridge, the colorful rice fields come into view. Although surrounded by dense trees and weeds, the walking conditions are quite pleasant.
The Moonlight Reservoir is a semi-valley type reservoir set against the backdrop of a small rural village in Yanggok-ri, Mungwang-myeon, Geosan-gun. Below the embankment, where the reservoir and high ground meet, agricultural fields stretch out, and the ridges of Sangjabong and Jangjabong rise around 400 meters above sea level. The reservoir provides agricultural water while also serving as a tranquil walking area to enjoy the rural landscape and nature.
The scenery around the Moonlight Reservoir varies depending on the walking sections. The surrounding ridges offer stunning views of nature from any direction. Among these, the charming village road that curves in an S-shape and the eco-friendly organic fields of Geosan are particularly striking. After the rice planting in May, the fields are flourishing, and a sizable cluster of yellow cosmos flowers has also formed below the embankment.
Additionally, the colorful rice fields have been created to showcase the excellence of Geosan's traditional agricultural culture using colorful rice since 2008. Over the years, images inspired by Jindo dogs, rising suns, Kim Hong-do's genre paintings, and themes like 'Cheerful Geosan', 'Mudong', and 'Ascending Dragon' have been depicted. This year's theme celebrates the Year of the Red Horse.
In the midst of lush green agricultural fields, the vibrant red horse leaps alongside the words 'Dynamic Leap Geosan'.
The colorful rice fields are most vivid when viewed from the observation deck at the Moonlight Reservoir. From the high ground, a single red horse appears to rise towards the sky over the green fields. This artwork can also be approached closely, as deck stairs connect to the agricultural fields at the end of the embankment.
As you get closer, the colors of the artwork become more vivid, though the overall shape appears less distinct. The flat view reveals only a small portion of the artwork. The rice plants have grown significantly and are beginning to bear ears.
Each year, as the artwork becomes clearer, a cluster of yellow cosmos flowers also blooms. Last year was beautiful, but this year the timing has aligned perfectly to create an even more stunning landscape, likely peaking in the second week of August and lasting into mid-month.
The Moonlight Reservoir, adorned with colorful rice fields and surrounded by lush ginkgo trees and clusters of yellow cosmos flowers, presents a beautiful summer scene in Geosan, known for its eco-friendly agriculture. I highly recommend taking a stroll around the Moonlight Reservoir while enjoying the colorful rice fields featuring the red horse.
