Exploring the Poetic World of Jo Myung-hee in Jincheon

We visited the Po-seok Jo Myung-hee Literary Museum, a must-see destination for an emotional journey in Jincheon. This museum, located in the hometown of the renowned pioneer of ethnic literature, Jo Myung-hee, is a unique space that encompasses not only his literary achievements but also the tumultuous experiences of his life and the pains of modern Korean history.
The museum holds special significance as it allows visitors to deeply feel the essence of Jincheon, the hometown that the poet longed for while living abroad. It is open for free viewing from 9 AM to 6 PM, except on Mondays.
As you stroll through the exhibition hall, you may hear the gentle melodies of nostalgic songs wafting through the air, capturing your attention. Curious about the source of this beautiful music, you will find a charming LP-shaped screen and headphones on one wall. The museum thoughtfully offers visitors the chance to experience Jo's literary world not just visually, but also through sound.
Listening to the serene songs through the headphones while reading the engraved verses on the wall deepens your understanding of Jo's longing for his hometown and his love for his people. Touching the screens around the exhibition reveals Jo's biography, photographs from that era, and detailed explanations of his literary world in an engaging format.
A large map titled 'The Footsteps of Po-seok' captures attention, depicting the journey of Jo's life starting from his hometown of Jincheon. It traces his path as he fled the oppression of Japanese rule, leading him to Pyongyang, Seoul, and ultimately to Vladivostok and Ussuriysk in Russia.
The hardships of his life as an exiled poet and the struggles of being a diaspora are palpable in every curve of the map. Surrounding the map are photographs of Jo's activities and a timeline that vividly testifies to the depth of his anguish. This space transcends mere information sharing, allowing visitors to feel the passionate life of a visionary intellectual.
As you follow the exhibition, you will also encounter stories of individuals closely connected to Jo Myung-hee. One particularly noteworthy figure is Jo Jung-hyeob, Jo's nephew, who was recognized for his literary talents by his uncle at an early age.
Records of his life, as seen in photographs, are fascinating as they reflect the turbulent history of modern Korea. After liberation, he established 'Geonseol Publishing' and played a significant role in promoting Korean literature by publishing works like Jo Myung-hee's 'Nakdong River' and Jeong Ji-yong's poetry collection.
At the top of the hill behind the museum stands a shimmering sculpture titled 'An Egg Embracing the Universe'. This work symbolizes vision, prosperity, and the honor of life, while embodying the hope for a healthy tomorrow and well-being for all visitors, represented as the source of life, the egg. If you are in need of deep reflection and rest, consider visiting Jincheon.
