Exploring the Natural Beauty of Seosan's Golden Mountain

Seosan's Golden Mountain boasts breathtaking natural scenery.
Located at 230-2, Dokgok-ri, Daesan-eup, Seosan-si, Chungcheongnam-do, this mountain is known for its majestic rock formations. It's common to name rocks and mountains based on their resemblance to various objects, and the Elephant Rock at Golden Mountain is a perfect example. The rock strikingly resembles an elephant's head, with its trunk extending precariously, making it look like a rocky cave from below.
As a resident of Gyeryong City, I rarely find the need to visit Seosan. There are closer beaches like Seocheon or Daecheon. However, the excitement of visiting a friend who works in Daesan makes the trip worthwhile. To start, we decided to try the famous steamed scallops in the area. Since Golden Mountain is located right by the sea, we could enjoy the scallops either before or after our hike, as they are well-known online.
After warming up with a bowl of seafood kalguksu (noodle soup) and steamed scallops, we set off to hike Golden Mountain. Although it stands at only 152.1 meters, it still offers a variety of sights. The hiking map indicates several points of interest, including the Im Gyeong-eop Shrine, Mongdol Beach, and Elephant Rock, enticing us to explore further.
The hiking trail may be simple, but I opted for the lower paths to avoid the steep summit. As someone with poor stamina, my breathing became ragged from the start. After crossing a ridge, I followed the signs to Elephant Rock and Mongdol Beach, catching a glimpse of the vast Daesan industrial complex in the distance.
As I descended, I noticed a crumbling wall, indicating that people once lived here. The short downhill path was a relief compared to the long uphill trek. Suddenly, the view opened up, revealing the blue waters of the West Sea, shining brightly under the clear sky. However, the beach was entirely rocky, with large boulders above and smaller pebbles below, reminiscent of the pebble beaches I've seen in Geoje and Yeosu.
Upon reaching the beach, the waves rolled in, crashing over the pebbles and creating a soothing sound. As I looked for Elephant Rock, I spotted a massive boulder resembling an elephant's trunk extending into the sea, with a hollow area resembling its eye below.
With the clear blue waters and distant tankers on the horizon, the scene was mesmerizing. The vast ocean felt empty, and I found myself lost in thought, watching the tankers slowly drift from left to right across my field of vision.
As I continued my hike, I discovered a small shrine dedicated to General Im Gyeong-eop, located at the summit. The waters surrounding Golden Mountain are known to be deep and treacherous, and the shrine serves as a place of worship for the mountain spirit and the general.
On my way back, I chose the trail leading to the summit. As I climbed, I reflected on the importance of regular exercise. At the top, a small shrine awaited, along with stunning views of the extended mudflats of Seosan.
Seosan's Golden Mountain may be small, but it offers a wealth of sights and experiences, making it a highly recommended destination. Don't miss the chance to try the steamed scallops and seafood kalguksu while you're there.
