Please note that the observatory may restrict access for safety reasons during the winter months (December to February) and when weather advisories are in effect.
You cannot drive directly to the observatory; you must park and take a shuttle bus or walk. The walk takes about 40 minutes one way. While it’s a pleasant walk through the woods, you can also opt for the shuttle bus if walking seems daunting.
Two 25-seat shuttle buses operate from 10 AM to 4 PM, but they do not run during the lunch break from 12 PM to 1 PM. I visited during lunch and was able to drive to the observatory temporarily when the shuttle was not in service.
If you plan to visit, it's advisable to check for the latest operational updates, as they may change.
Pets are allowed on the shuttle bus, but they must be leashed, and certain breeds may require a muzzle. Large dogs are restricted from using the shuttle.
Initially, I wondered why it was called the 'Hanbando Geomorphology Observatory.' Upon reaching the observatory, the answer became clear.
The observatory stands about 14.5 meters tall. As you ascend the stairs, your view gradually expands, and upon reaching the top, Chopyeong Reservoir unfolds beautifully before you.
Upon closer inspection, the terrain shaped by the water resembles a map of Korea, making the name of this place immediately understandable.
Looking down to the left, you can see the largest fishing area in the central region along with several fishing platforms.
The views are magnificent, even more so in person than in photographs. The blue summer sky, lush green mountains, and the tranquil Chopyeong Reservoir create a soothing landscape.
One of the unique charms of this place is that it offers different scenery throughout the four seasons. In spring, cherry blossoms bloom, enhancing the beauty of the area. Summer brings a refreshing atmosphere with the vibrant reservoir, while autumn showcases stunning foliage, and winter offers a serene natural beauty.
