Exploring the Geochang Incident Memorial Park

Today, I would like to introduce a notable place to visit in Geochang: the Geochang Incident Memorial Park.
The Geochang Incident Memorial Park was established in 1996 under the "Special Measures Act for the Restoration of Honor for Victims of the Geochang Incident" and began construction in 1998, completing in 2004 as part of a joint memorial project.
This park is also a great spot to enjoy the blooming flowers in May.
When I visited, azaleas, flower grasses, and pansies were in full bloom.
Hydrangea pots were beautifully arranged on both sides of the entrance, making it a recommended place to visit for flower viewing in June.
The park takes about an hour to explore, and I highly recommend visiting the History Education Center, which provides essential information about the Geochang Incident.
Walking along the sandy paths 10 and 12 will not only be enjoyable but also beneficial for your health.
This memorial park was created to honor the souls of innocent civilians who were collectively sacrificed by some military forces in the Shinwon-myeon area of Geochang from February 9 to 11, 1951, during the Korean War.
Inside the memorial hall, there are tablets honoring 719 victims of the Geochang Incident, and the path leading up to the hall is adorned with beautiful azaleas.
As you ascend the stairs, you can fully enjoy the flowers arranged in the shape of butterflies, symbolizing remembrance and comfort.
The park features a vibrant mix of pansies and azaleas, creating a stunning visual experience.
In Geochang, the place with the most flowers planted is the Changpo Garden, followed closely by the Geochang Incident Memorial Park.
There are beautiful quotes that make for great photo backgrounds.
On the way to the History Education Center, you will encounter two ponds, which I believe are also designed in the shape of butterflies.
You can even see the wind turbines on the distant Gamak Mountain, adding to the scenic beauty of the area.
The Geochang Incident History Education Center serves as a place of learning about the painful history of the Geochang Incident.
It is open year-round and free to visit, with operating hours from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM.
The Geochang Incident Memorial Park is also designated as a site for the national flower, the Rose of Sharon, making it a recommended place for flower viewing in the summer.
The Rose of Sharon Park spans 1.2 hectares with 4,200 plants, blooming between August and September.
